Seeing Red: a Spotlight on Our Beloved Lunio Mascot

Seeing Red: a Spotlight on Our Beloved Lunio Mascot

We want to take you on a behind-the-scenes journey of how our beloved brand mascot, Red, came to be.?

Origins of Red?

Back when we were PPC Protect, Red first made an appearance as a cute red panda in a tree, something we included just to illustrate the efforts we were making to be an ethical business, and more environmentally conscious. The illustration quickly became a favourite amongst our team, and we knew we needed to include the red panda in our illustration development workshops during the transition to our new brand,?Lunio.

From PPC Protect Vikings to space-exploring Red

During our rebranding process, we explored numerous avenues to find a suitable replacement for our beloved Vikings (remember those guys?), who were well-recognised but no longer aligned with our evolving brand. However, none of the alternatives were hitting the mark for us.

Why a Red Panda?

After extensive research, we discovered that incorporating animals into branding and advertising resonates well with audiences. Brands like Andrex, Moonpig, and Compare the Market have successfully utilised this strategy.

We wanted to establish Lunio as a trustworthy brand and at the time, the red panda stood out to us as an animal that didn't have many existing connotations, allowing us to develop its personality and characteristics in line with our vision.

When creating characters for our rebrand, we were determined to visually represent our internal values of inclusivity and diversity. By designing Red as agender, we wanted to keep them as a mascot that everyone and anyone could identify with. We wanted to ensure that our mascot didn't exclude or misrepresent any group of people. You can see this in our supporting illustrations as well - no people, just a bunch of planets and inanimate objects that are happy to see you!

"Designing Red was an exciting challenge. We wanted to capture the spirit of adventure, knowledge, and support, while ensuring that the character was relatable to everyone. It's been incredibly rewarding to see Red come to life and resonate with our audience." -?Elizabeth Harris

Were there other alternatives to Red?

Throughout the creative process, we explored various ideas and concepts before settling on Red. This included Red having various other animal friends! While these concepts didn't make the final cut, they played an important role in shaping our decision-making. We firmly believe in continuous improvement and staying open to future possibilities, which means that Red's character and role might evolve as our brand evolves.
