Seeing Beyond !!

 Despite being a brilliant student, a desk-bound job was difficult for him. As he required to wear a truss always because of an inguinal hernia, he decided to become a machinist. After completing his study and apprenticeship, he opened a workshop on 17 November 1846 with 100 silver coins (Talers). He borrowed this amount from his brother. What did all this workshop use to sell? Apart from the repair works, it used to sell eyeglasses, telescopes, microscopes, loupes, drawing instruments, thermometers, barometers, balances, glassblowing accessories, etc. Well, I forgot to tell you the name of the gentleman. His name was Carl Zeiss.

In subsequent years, Zeiss started making a unique microscope, which became very popular among scientists. Contrary to the available microscopes in the market, the microscope designed by Zeiss could be focussed by moving the tube containing the optics instead of moving the objects. His collaboration with Ernst Abbe, a German mathematician, and physicist, brought remarkable achievement when this duo designed and manufactured new microscopes perfecting the homogeneous immersion lens in 1878.

Carl Zeiss was a hard worker and a strict administrator. He used to monitor the quality of the product himself and had set a high standard for his works. Carl Zeiss would destroy the microscopes produced by his apprentices, which did not meet the standard. The working hour of his workshop used to 6 AM to 7 PM, but he established a pleasant and comfortable work atmosphere. No wonder his company acquired a world-wide reputation, and his name became one of the biggest brands in the history of medical science. Carl Zeiss could attend the celebration of the completion of the 10,000th microscope by his company before dying on 3 December 1888.
