"Perseverance is the hard work you do after you get tired of doing the hard work you already did" -Newt Gingrich
Imagine a child who made his/her first attempt to stand and barely walk. Few seconds on those tiny feet and fall. And then this happens quite a few times. A tiny pause. What do you want that child to do? Considering walking impossible & ignore it OR trying again only thinking about the reward.
Well, I'll choose the latter option and all of us did the same when we were just a few months old. And voila we all are enjoying that reward of walking to this date.
That was our life's first anonymous lesson on PERSEVERANCE.
This pandemic changed all our lives to some extent. Amidst a lot going around in the world (majorly negative). I wanted to keep my focus on the positives. Kept reading knowledgeable books & articles. Wanted to use this period as a learning phase of life.
And eventually found one attribute which I have learned for life, perseverance. This time the learning of the lesson wasn’t anonymous though.
Without wasting time on how and what made me learn that let us talk about what exactly can be learned from this attribute. Let me give you a textbook definition of the same first. Perseverance is the ability to keep doing something despite obstacles. People who persevere show steadfastness in doing something despite how hard it is or how long it.
Now it simply talks about the truth & the truth is simple there are very few—if any—genuine cases of overnight success. The majority of successful people and businesses have dedicated themselves to a goal and persevered for a long time before reaching a high level of achievement that is finally noticed and talked about by others and for a person like me acknowledge by the person himself/herself.
Some people are born with the tendency to persevere. I was definitely not one of them. Had to learn it someday through tough life experiences. So in tough times of your life when you are probably on the verge of quitting thinking you were never meant to be there. You have to turn on your perseverant being. It is just level up from being only a Hard worker.
Perseverance – sometimes called "grit" – is the great leveler.
How to do it:
- Clarify your goal. Base it on your purpose, needs, and abilities.
- Maintain optimism (MUST HAVE)
- Acknowledge your accomplishment (even the smallest ones).
- Care for your mind, body, emotions, and spirit.
- Experience yourself living your goal today.
- 5 people who proved perseverance pays off:
1) Henry Ford- Ford innovated industrial production with the assembly line. However, before founding the extremely successful Ford Motor Company he was previously bankrupted and left penniless 5 times from failed ventures.
2) Walt Disney- Walt Disney has entertained children all over the world for nearly a century and created a billion-dollar merchandising empire. Mr Disney was fired from his first job at the Kansas City Star because he lacked imagination and had no good ideas." In an ironic turn of events years later the Walt Disney Company acquired the Kansas City Star with the purchase of parent company ABC.
3) J.K. Rowling - At the time when Rowling was writing the original Harry Potter book, her life was a self-described mess. She was going through a divorce and living in a tiny flat with her daughter. Rowling was surviving on government subsidies, and her mother had just passed away from multiple sclerosis. J.K. turned these negatives into a positive by devoting most of her free time to the Harry Potter series. She also drew from her bad personal experiences when writing. The result is a brand name currently worth nearly $15 billion.
4) Steve Jobs– Despite being the co-founder of one of the world's most successful companies, Steve was proof that perseverance is an essential competency of a great leader. In 1997, Jobs was on the brink of bankruptcy, but he never allowed the situation to hold him back, he persevered and was rewarded with remarkable success with Apple.
5) YOU.
Yes, tell your story to yourself that how you were focused on what you wanted to achieve & achieved it or will achieve it. How first you fought with your own thoughts to keep your focus on. And then, irrespective of the circumstance, environment, etc. You achieved what you have.
And ALWAYS Be excited to See What Happens When You Don't Give Up.
