China announced it would impose 25% punitive tariffs on a wide range of US seafood products on June 15 and you can see the full list below.
These include Pacific salmon, cod, Alaska pollock and flatfish, all staples of the processing and re-exporting sector, as well as lobster, crab and other shellfish, which are all becoming popular with Chinese consumers. They go into effect on July 6 and will be calculated as an additional tax on top of previous tariffs.
However, Undercurrent News sources said the 25% will not apply for products going into China, being processed and then re-exported, which is what happens with the bulk of the salmon and whitefish.
Also, Undercurrent reported on Monday that Canadian lobster sellers are likely to benefit.
The Canadian lobster industry already holds a dominant market position in China and, as soon as July 6, China's new 25% tariff on US seafood will kick into effect, making US lobster roughly $3.00 per pound more expensive. The US' neighbors to the north have as much as 30 million lbs. of lobster in inventory and could have more in three weeks when those calls come, said Stewart Lamont, the managing director of Tangier Lobster in the province of Nova Scotia.
“The Chinese are the most disciplined procurement folks in the world,” Lamont told Undercurrent. “They will chase a nickel on a good day, but on this they would be chasing two-dollar bills. I am guessing in their search they may locate Canadian hard shell.”
