Security: Time, Team, or Money?

Cisco produced a great report last month, where they found:

‘15% of organizations globally...have a mature level of preparedness to handle the security risks of our hybrid world.’

The European average is below 10%, except the UK (17%) and Germany (11%).

Are you surprised that 39% of companies in Indonesia are mature?

The main reason for the variance is that companies in developed markets have more legacy systems when compared to emerging markets.

So it’s easier to integrate security in companies from emerging markets.

Which got me thinking…

Maybe this means that emerging (newer) companies should be more mature in their security journey?

Well, that’s not the case…

Cisco found SMEs are the least well-prepared, with only 10% being mature.

Most issues I encounter with my clients fall into one of three categories: Time, Team, or Money.

Given the size of businesses and the relative lack of legacy systems, it seems SMEs have a low level of maturity because:

  1. Time: limited focus on security from top management
  2. Money: limited budgets being allocated to security, or
  3. Team: no security leader driving the right priorities


But when —

SMEs represent 90% of businesses, and over 50% of employment worldwide

— it means there need to be more conversations with top management to ensure security is a bigger focus.

Which is easier said than done.
