Security Manager and Theft of Time

Last week we consulted with a director of a company. In the discussion he mentioned a particular point of view to our surprise. He was very concerned about the theft-of-time. His actual words were '' they are stealing my time''.

Let us consider the situation - position- implications

A garage owner employs mechanics. The chief mechanic has the keys to the garage and is familiar with the alarm system as they are first to open in the mornings. The mechanic makes a deal with a client - '' I can do you a good deal. Buy the parts and I will install the parts at a good price for you on the side. The boss could charge you USD$ 600 for labor and I will do it for you for USD$450. Meet me here on Saturday afternoon when all the staff leave as I lock up, or I can do it for you on Sunday''.

There could be staff on the ground in the garage that may know what is going on, or they could be part of the insider threat and working in concert either voluntarily or under duress. They could be blackmailed or extorted to participate and have not choice in keeping quiet and may lie or hide information.

Without doubt, the security manager is constantly considering and confronting new challenges in theater. This viewpoint of the director was insightful which bring about the fact that there are issues on the ground that may not be considered as a viable reason for concern but when you sit down and add up the value of the time investment stolen and what does it mean - it could be gob-smacking.

Mitigating the X Factor is the biggest nightmare of security professionals. What is going on the ground right here and now under their nose without them knowing so. Staff could lie, hide or volunteer information for their own agenda

Security success depends on the level of situational awareness of the decision maker on the ground and the reaction speed.

Being unaware of what is happening on the ground means you have no idea of the threat in theater or the current level of collateral damage.

Are you sure that you are aware of all that is happening on the ground in your region of interest? - Do you really want to know? - Do you need to know?

There is a "risk" (actual or theoretical) by the mere existence of anything / everything. For you to live is a risk, regardless of where in the world you live or work (or occupation). Likelihood of a problem / loss (errors, theft (physical, intellectual, time...), fire, damage, change in value, others) acceptable risk is up to the individual / organization. It is that, which sets the parameters of acceptability and who we hire (on staff or as contractor (shared liability)). Listen to some, everyday is the last one - barely survived the potential for ...... While for others in the same arena, another day... same same, manage what we do / how we do / .... If not - who would fly in a plane? Drive in a car? Go on a boat or ship? On time theft, a real issue for many. Cameras for physical security also help track people / coming & going. Entrance / exit card in & out, others. While on site - another story. Some work well and always "perpetual motion". Others "out straight yet, did nothing", sound like "they saved the world". Still others, maybe slow in one part yet - monitor everything / look for potential issues, keeps things moving, does reports after (during depending upon timing), prevents issues... See some on computer all day - yet, flip screen or tab - games.... others.... keep things moving...
