Security Baggage Scanner

Security Baggage Scanner

TSA is working on new scanning machines that are still effective searching for objects that aren't allowed in the airplanes but that don't depict the passengers in a state of undress that some find embarrassing. Explosive detection machines can also be used for both carry-on and checked baggage.

The first Security check that your checked bags go through depends on the airport. In the United States, most major airports have a computer tomography (CT) Scanner. A CT scanner is a hollow tube that surrounds your bag. The X-ray mechanism revolves slowly around it, bombarding it with X-rays and recording the resulting data.

The scanner is able to calculate the mass and density of individual objects in your bag based on this tomogram. If an object's mass/density falls within the range of a dangerous material, the CT scanner warns the operator of a potential hazardous object.

CT  Scanners are slow compared to other types of BaggageScanningSystems. Because of this, they are not used to check every bag. Instead, only bags that the computer flags as "suspicious" are checked. These flags are triggered by any anomaly that shows up in the reservation or check-in process. For example, if a person buys a one-way ticket and pays cash, this is considered atypical and could cause the computer to flag that person. When this happens, that person's checked bags are immediately sent through the CT scanner, which is usually located somewhere near the ticketing counter.

Being in the security industry for 40 plus years, I recommend this being an effective method to ensure no explosives, weapons, narcotic material is smuggled aboard that would ensure passenger safety. In the years gone by, we use to check hotel guests bags using hands and gloves which use to irritate them. However, the moment it was explained the exercise done was for their own safety they did cooperate. We have a few airline disasters within the past few years that are quite strange and none knows the actual cause for them to disappear or crash. What I see is mere speculations with no conclusive evidence on a few. Even with all the high-tech equipment we have today search & rescue has not happened other than the Emirates flight that caught fire on the tarmac with all aboard saved!
