FEATURING

Jacob Alamat , Senior Vice President, Home and Life, Silicon Labs

?You’ll never be hack-proof, but companies are taking a more and more active role in building adaptability in manufacturing to prevent hacks from happening to consumers.

?We, as an industry, need to be aware of what bothers the consumer.

Jacob Alamat
Kurt Busch , CEO, Syntiant

?There’s some education that can happen within this area that we don’t have as a society yet. If people understand that data is their own sovereignty, then they can then make a conscious decision about what’s important to them in terms of privacy.

?There are several conflicting forces within the industry. These devices have become integral in our homes, which has made it hard for small companies to grow due to the high barriers within the market. Device manufacturers have such huge shares in the area and they don't want to be the weakest link in the chain.

Kurt Busch
Nancy Goldberg , EVP and CMO, NAGRAVISION, Kudelski Group

?Consumers are thinking about the privacy and data of their smart homes, but they aren’t doing anything about it. They’re waiting for someone else to do it.

?We have a responsibility as a company to ask, “How are we enriching people’s lives and not just doing things because we can?”

?The smart home can be powerful, so we have to be incredibly responsible, starting with the consumer and working backwards.

?Consumers are willing to pay more for extra compliance to have peace of mind within the home.

Nancy Goldberg
Michelle Mindala-Freeman , COO, Connectivity Standards Alliance

?We have to build standards that think about the consumer’s next escalation of risk.

?You need to look at the whole system, but from the protocol level, there’s concern about what data is being used within products.

?Only share data between devices that need it, and make sure it is encrypted. ?There are 40-50 security government regulations coming out soon. It’s incumbent on the industry to harmonize the requirements.

Michelle Mindala-Freeman
Vikram Venkatasubramanian , Founder and CEO, Nandi Security

?Consumers often ask me if their phones are listening to them. There’s significant mistrust in the market.

?We still need people within the security process, it’s going to be key in every product design.

?It’s better to own it and be transparent with customers rather than them finding out and asking you to address it.

?Looking for the weakest links not only applies to devices, but also apps. There are a lot of abandoned apps on phones.

Vikram Venkatasubramanian
