The cyber security landscape is transforming at an unprecedented pace, and it’s no longer just an IT issue—it’s a core business challenge. Emerging technologies, evolving geopolitical tensions, and increasingly complex regulatory frameworks are reshaping how organisations must approach cyber risk. The Global Cybersecurity Outlook 2025, published by the World Economic Forum , provides invaluable insights for business leaders looking to navigate these turbulent waters effectively.
The statistics from the report leave no room for complacency: 72% of organisations have reported an increase in cyber risks, with ransomware remaining a top threat. Meanwhile, 47% of organisations are now facing new threats from AI, particularly generative AI. And as if that wasn’t enough, two-thirds of organisations are grappling with a severe shortage of cyber security talent. These challenges highlight the reality: cyber resilience is not just an operational need; it’s central to protecting a business's very foundation, reputation, and long-term growth.
Key Findings from the Global Cybersecurity Outlook Report 2025:
1. Complex Cyber Security Risks
The cyber security landscape is becoming increasingly complex, driven by:
2. Cyber Resilience Gaps
A growing gap exists in cyber resilience, particularly between small and large organisations. 35% of small businesses report inadequate cyber resilience, a figure that has increased sevenfold since 2022, while only 10% of large businesses report similar deficiencies. The public sector is also disproportionately affected, with 38% of respondents citing insufficient resilience. Large organisations can help by supporting smaller partners, and the public sector must invest in upskilling their cyber security teams to bridge the gap.
3. AI and Automation: New Threats
AI is rapidly transforming the cyber security landscape, both in terms of defence and attack. 66% of organisations predict AI will have the greatest impact on cyber security in 2025. However, only 37% of organisations have processes in place to assess AI tool security before deployment. Generative AI is enabling more sophisticated attacks, with 47% of organisations reporting increased concern about AI-driven threats. To stay ahead, organisations must implement stringent security checks for AI tools and ensure human oversight to mitigate potential misuse.
4. Regulatory Challenges
As global regulations multiply, compliance has become an increasingly complex task. 76% of CISOs highlight the fragmentation of regulations across jurisdictions as a significant barrier to effective cyber security. Developing a flexible compliance strategy that can adapt to shifting global standards is essential. Leveraging automated compliance tools can streamline tracking and reporting, reducing the risk of non-compliance.
5. The Skills Shortage
The cyber security skills gap remains a critical challenge. Two-thirds of organisations report a shortage of qualified cyber security professionals, with the public sector being particularly hard hit. 49% of public-sector organisations indicate a lack of talent to meet cyber security goals. To address this, organisations must prioritise continuous training for their existing workforce and forge partnerships with universities and training institutions to nurture future talent.
6. A Security-First Culture
Cyber Security is no longer a matter solely for IT teams; it is integral to business operations. Organisations must cultivate a security-first culture to ensure resilience and protect stakeholder trust. As 72% of organisations report an increase in cyber risks, fostering a security-centric mindset across all departments is critical. Collaboration between IT, leadership, and operational teams will help build a comprehensive, agile security framework capable of adapting to emerging threats.

The growing complexity of cyber risks, regulatory challenges, and the expanding skills gap mean that organisations must take proactive steps to bolster their security posture. By addressing supply chain vulnerabilities, strengthening resilience, preparing for AI-driven threats, and tackling the skills shortage, businesses can safeguard their operations, protect customer trust, and thrive in 2025 and beyond.

1 个月Thanks for sharing Warren Atkinson. This was a really interesting read. In your opinion why is there a cyber talent shortage? It is a complex and difficult career path; however, since our age is mostly digital I would think there would be more people going into cyber security/more cyber careers. Curious to hear your thoughts!
