Kim Knight and Shanelle McKenzie, founders of The Villij

Imagine the nerves of trying something new like a yoga class and having your nerves amplified when you look around the yoga studio. You feel disconnected because no one looks like you. This was the exact experience two friends Kim Knight and Shanelle McKenzie felt even when trying yoga studios in different cities like New York, Los Angeles, Montreal, and Toronto but didn’t feel represented in those yoga communities. As their friendship grew, they decided to create a fitness space for people of colour. In 2017, they had their first The Villij and held a Trap Yoga session in Montreal. Through this event, they learned that 60% of the women had never tried yoga before, which only reaffirmed the need to reach more women of colour. Once the pandemic hit, Kim and Shanelle pivoted to an online platform that helped women of colour in the United States, Caribbean, and Canada try and experience yoga. They have now planted roots in Toronto, becoming the first wellness studio for women of colour. Read more about Kim, Shanelle, and their business, The Villij.
