Prioritize Data Security For Responsible Use Of AI

With the proliferation of AI, specifically around chatbots like ChatGPT, it's imperative that employees remain diligent in their efforts to safeguard sensitive data landing up as part of the vast volumes of data that is building AI apps. This doesn’t mean marketing is prohibited from using AI, says Jesmine La Russa, Vice President of Marketing at The Doctors Company. She was interviewed as part of CMO Council’s latest report, Marketing and Data Security: The Unlikely Brand Building Partnership. “We’re working with IT to develop the digital and marketing technology roadmap, which will certainly include the application of AI tools and resources. From a marketing perspective, there’s a lot we would like to do with personalized data, too.” Invest in training and education to improve understanding of roles and responsibilities between marketing and security

Be Smart About Harnessing Power Of Gen AI

There are two issues with GenAI and large language models like ChatGPT, says David Gould, Chief Customer Officer at EncompaaS. “The first is the holistic nature of data that’s being interrogated. If you’re using Microsoft Copilot, you can only interrogate online data in SharePoint Online. You’re not going to get a complete response because 80% of your corporate data is in other repositories. So not having a holistic view is a fundamental issue. The other issue concerns large language models vs. small language models. Rather than relying on publicly available AI models to answer questions, companies are now turning their focus on internal content to create small language models.” There are still many questions to be answered on the security, sensitivity and volatility of information. Excellent insights, especially around the importance of data security and leveraging AI responsibly. I agree that close collaboration between marketing and IT is key to success. However, it's worth considering that IT teams often face challenges in fully understanding AI models as they evolve so rapidly. While marketing teams are pushing for AI integration to drive personalization and growth, IT might struggle to keep pace with the latest developments in AI, which could slow down implementation. This raises an interesting debate. How can CMOs ensure IT is equipped to support these advancements without compromising on security or innovation? Balancing technical expertise and speed of adoption will be critical.
