What is Sound?

Sound is a form of energy that propagates through air (or other mediums) as a wave. These waves are generated by vibrating objects and travel through the air as a series of compressions and rarefactions Fig(1). The basic properties of sound waves include amplitude, frequency, and wavelength:


Governing equation



  • Amplitude refers to the height of the wave, determining the loudness of the sound. Higher amplitude translates to louder sound.
  • Frequency, measured in Hertz (Hz), is the number of vibrations per second. It influences the pitch of the sound; higher frequencies produce higher-pitched sounds.
  • Wavelength is the distance between two consecutive points of the wave, such as crest to crest or trough to trough. It's inversely proportional to the frequency.

Understanding Noise

Noise is essentially unwanted sound. It's a subjective term, as a sound perceived as noise by one person may be pleasant to another. The impact of noise on individuals can vary based on its intensity and frequency. Noise pollution, especially in urban environments, is a significant concern due to its adverse effects on health and well-being.

The Realm of Acoustics

Acoustics is the science that deals with the study of all mechanical waves in gases, liquids, and solids, including vibration, sound, ultrasound, and infrasound. In practical terms, acoustics involves the production, control, transmission, reception, and effects of sound. The field has vast applications, from architectural acoustics, ensuring optimal sound quality in buildings, to underwater acoustics, crucial for marine navigation and research.
