The secrets behind storytelling - Part 4

The secrets behind storytelling - Part 4

Many of my clients tell me that they have struggles with memorizing the flow of their talk or presentation. Especially when they talk about a rather complex subject and need to make sure that they don’t miss any important information. It doesn’t matter how good your content is: If you don’t manage to present it through a clear and comprehensive structure, your audience might end up confused and maybe not even get your point.

Storytelling can make your life much more easier here. We already learned that our brains are programmed to listen to stories. And since we are natural storytellers it doesn't take that much effort to tell a story - we are much more likely to remember the flow of a story than any other structure. But there is more: We even think in stories. Which is why it is easier for our audience to process information through stories. So if you incorporate storytelling in your presentation it will not only be much more easier for you to remember the flow of your presentation, it will also be much more easier for your audience to process the information you share - especially when it is very complex and abstract.

This is the moment where my clients usually say ?You might be right, but I don’t have a story to tell“. But is that really true? It might not always be that obvious and it might take some time and creativity to come up with one - but I can guarantee you that there is always a story. Because the one story you can always tell is how you found out about the information that you are sharing or how you discovered this insight. Storytelling does not necessarily mean that there always needs to be a hero and some amazing adventure. What is important is that everything you say is connected through a narrative - and with the right storytelling skills, you can make every story interesting and engaging.

So that's secret number 4: Storytelling can help you to memorize the flow of your presentation and makes it easier for your audience to process even complex information.
