Minamata Convention on Mercury
A global treaty to protect human health and the environment from the adverse effects of mercury.
The sixth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6) will take place from 26 February to 1 March, 2024 at the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) headquarters in Naiobi, Kenya. One of the main focus of the event will be how multilateralism can help tackle the triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste.
The Secretariat of the Minamata Convention on Mercury will?take active part at the event, including organizing and participating in several activities relevant to the Convention, from knowledge-driven capacitiy-building to effective multilateral action and opportunities for integrated solutions.
Executive Secretary?Monika Stankiewicz?stated: "I welcome this unique opportunity at UNEA-6 to engage closely with delegates, stakeholders, and the broader Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) community.?Throughout this pivotal week, the Assembly will provide a major platform for the exchange of insights and approaches to effectively combat pollution, mitigate climate change and safeguard biodiversity".

Second short national reports of the Minamata Convention: Read the submitted reports

The second short national report covers the reporting period from?1 January 2021 until 31 December 2022, and was due on 31 December 2023. Article 21 of the Minamata Convention requires each Party to report to the Conference of the Parties, through the Secretariat, on the measures the Party has taken to implement the provisions of the Convention, on the effectiveness of such measures and on possible challenges in meeting the objective of the Convention.?Read the?submitted reports here.
