The Secret to Successful Networking: It’s Not Just About You

Over the past two years, I've been asked a recurring question by job seekers: "Mike, how can I network and build relationships when I feel like I’m the only one putting in effort?" They pour their heart and soul into crafting personalized messages, only to be met with indifference or self-serving responses. They're reaching out because they feel you can bring value to their life.

Networking, at its core, is about fostering genuine relationships, not simply accumulating followers. Yet, many professionals reduce it to a transactional exchange, a means to an end. They reach out with a singular goal: to sell their product, service, or themselves. While self-promotion is essential, it should never overshadow the importance of building authentic relationships. They may be reaching out because of your expertise in a field they're eager to learn about or become more proficient in.

I recently tested this theory by reaching out to several people. When I've reached out to these people, I’ve often been met with automated responses or self-serving pitches. It's disheartening to encounter individuals who seem more concerned with their own agenda than fostering a genuine connection.? When a thoughtful message is met with such a response, it feels as though the other person cares little about the individual.

To truly thrive in your network, you must be willing to give as much as you take. Remember that golden rule: treat others as you would like to be treated. When you consistently ask for favors without offering support in return, you risk alienating those you seek to connect with.

Imagine a family member who only reaches out during times of need. How would you feel about such a one-sided relationship? Your network feels the same way when you’re constantly seeking their attention but fail to reciprocate.

It is not about you.? Do not be the person that is only looking out for themself.? Effective networking is about building genuine relationships, not just self-promotion. By prioritizing reciprocity, empathy, and genuine interest in others, you can create a network that truly supports and elevates you. Remember, a strong network is a two-way street.

Remember, networking isn't a zero-sum game. By prioritizing empathy, reciprocity, and authenticity, you can build a network that will propel you to new heights. So, the next time you reach out to someone, ask yourself: “How can I add value to their life?” By making this shift, you’ll not only strengthen your relationships but also open doors to new opportunities.

Absolutely, Mike! You’ve captured the essence of networking perfectly. Fostering genuine connections truly makes a difference in building a supportive community. What are some of your favorite ways to add value to your network?
