The Secret to Success? Think Like an Athlete—Even if You Hate Sports

The Secret to Success? Think Like an Athlete—Even if You Hate Sports

Have you ever pretended to like something to impress somebody??

I have.

Many times.

I started as wanting to impress the boys I liked.

And then it turned into wanting to impress the leaders where I worked so I could move up. ?

In grade four, I pretended to like the Boston Bruins and Cam Neely to impress the boy I liked.

When I met my husband, I pretended to like to watch baseball (sorry honey but you’re watching the game alone).

And in the corporate world, I pretended to know what was happening with hockey and football.

But in reality, I only really watch soccer.

And that came organically from it being the only sport I played as a child and then living in Peru for two years.

But, if you want to talk about athletes and their habits, I’m in.

I don’t really like sports yet I love studying athletes.

Why?

Because they are phenomenal creatures.

Take LeBron James for instance.

He only makes 51% of all of the shots he takes on the net.

If you looked at those stats from an academic standpoint, that would mean he’s almost a failure.

Yet, he’s the #2 scorer for the NBA.

How?

  1. He does a mental rehearsal (visualization) of every game before he plays it.
  2. He prioritizes his well-being (diet, sleep, exercise).
  3. He goes for every opportunity.
  4. If he misses, he lets go and moves on.

And he’s not alone.?

Most elite athletes are the same.

  1. They dream big.
  2. They put in the time and effort. ?
  3. They face their fears.
  4. They bounce back from failure, quickly.
  5. They look after themselves.
