The Secret to Securing Cheap Farmland for Farming in 2024

The Secret to Securing Cheap Farmland for Farming in 2024

When it comes to sustainable farming/agriculture, two important sentence says it best. The first is “Sustainable agriculture isn't an option--it's a necessity!” and the second is something Sam Farr said, and I quote, “To make agriculture sustainable, the grower has got to be able to make a profit”.

As a Nigerian, this has been the worst year in our food sustainability drive. The very fabric of the survival of every Nigerian was put to a careless test. What had happened to Nigeria up until now in terms of food security is the repeated failure of multiple successive leaders, not just one!

Allocated fund to spur food security in the country becomes the lot of a few well-connected people, who often (or maybe not) get those fund to diversify their interest and portfolio in something that is totally unrelated to Agriculture. And quite frankly, bulk of the people among the few who eventually get these loans and Intervention end up wasting them on unproductive farming method and pro

duct.

So, how do we manage this challenge?

First and foremost, only multiple productive approach can render a lasting solution to this challenge. Also, the engagement of the private sector is paramount to the overall success of Nigeria’s current food sustainability drive. A while ago, I discussed why this is the time for southern Nigeria to take up the helm of food security in this country. If you did not get to read my piece on the matter, kindly click here to read it.

However, for the private sector to get involved, there is a need to provide CHEAP AND ACCESSIBLE FARMLAND to this timely messiah called private investors!

Let us face it, an average Nigerian, doesn’t have the financial stableness to afford crops and product produced in sophisticated agricultural production system, such as Hydro, Aqua, and all other -ponics. So, that brings us back to affordable and accessible farmland.

I launched project 10,000 acres this year to help my partners access cheap and affordable farmland across the entire southwest Nigeria. If you don’t know about this, click here to read up on it

I’ve got a progress report for my partners soon. Kindly see the video below of me scouting for the farmland by clicking here.

To help us run through how you or anyone around you can secure cheap, and genuine farmland in Nigeria in 2024, let’s use a Q&A approach to the topic.

Are There Genuine and Cheap Farmland in Nigeria?

The short answer is YES!

And it will surprise you to know there are cheap farmland across all the states in Nigeria. However, we’ve got to understand that the word “cheap” is quite relative. While NGN1 Million can be cheap for Mr/Mrs A, the same value may be excessively expensive for Mr/Mrs B, and can be just the perfect price cap for Mr/Mrs C.

So what I am saying in essence is your budget is what determine where and what land is cheap for you!

What Secret is There to Know About Getting Cheap Farmland?

Well it won’t be a secret if it is common knowledge right?

Basically, when we talk about cheap farmland, it is not only cheap when it comes to buying. Sometimes the goal of why you want to venture into farming is what matters. Buying is just one way to access a farmland. You could also rent or lease a farmland, particularly when you are just trying out farming for the first time. Buying a farmland can mean more than just farming. Because, the farmland on which you farm today is the same land on which the city of tomorrow is built upon. So before investing in farmland, consider what the goal is!

There are truly some people who should be leasing a farmland right now, instead, there are currently purchasing. While there are those who should be purchasing, instead, there are leasing at the moment. So get your positioning right and only then should you decide which to do.

You can lease a farmland for as low as NGN20,000/acre/year while you can buy for as low as NGN200,000 per acre, depending on the region or what part of the country you want the farmland.
