The secret sauce to effective goal setting

The secret sauce to effective goal setting

One topic we consistently get questions about at Leadr is goal-setting. In fact,?our 2020 guide to effective goal-setting?is still one of our most popular resources.?

It's so easy to get wrapped up in "the way we've always done things," and forget to use our past efforts as a guide to learn from and use what we learn to pave the path forward.

Most of the benefit we get from goal-setting happens after the fact. Here are a few tips for getting the most out of your goal-setting efforts.

1. Track the small action items along the way.?Not only does having a checklist of tasks help everyone stay aligned and focused throughout a project, it also helps you determine which steps to repeat or replace in the future. (Pst.?Leadr's latest update?makes this easier than ever.)

2. Hold a postmortem after wrapping up a goal.?Instead of immediately moving on to the next big thing, hold a 45-minute meeting including everyone involved in a goal when it's completed. Discuss what you want to do again and where you could have improved. Break down the data and determine if the goal was a success. If it was, what needs to happen next? If not, how can your team pivot to a new strategy?

3. Determine next steps.?Don't let the hard work your team has done come to a screeching halt when a goal reaches the finish line. Using the postmortem discoveries, determine a new goal for the team to aspire towards and keep the momentum rolling.?

How you use the learnings from your day-to-day work determines how your team and organization will improve moving forward.?

Don't miss out on the benefits that come from?stopping to smell the roses,?celebrating wins, and focusing on continuous improvement as your team works towards making your mission a reality.

My challenge to you this week is to set a meeting now for a goal postmortem, no matter how big or small the goal may be.?

Until next time.
