Secret of my SUCCESS: HIRE people smarter than me. In my own case it was always EASY ! Then, empower and trust them to do their jobs. Agree ?
Many managers try to hire Mini-Mes.
Hiring managers hire Mini-mes unconsciously. They ask interview questions that they themselves know the answers to.
Instead:
Hire people whose questions you can not answer.
Hire people who raise questions you do not even know you need to raise.
Hire people who complement what you know, not amplify what you already know.
Hire people who are more knowledgeable and more experienced than you are.
--
Then, let them tell you what to do - as per Steve Job's famous quote. That's the Google way, that's the Facebook way.
--
I HIRED someone who did NOT ANSWER any of my questions.
He turned out to be a great employee, quick and reliable – total success story.
Here is why.
1) He handled all of the questions with grace. I respect people who do not know something and are open about it. We all start from knowing nothing. As long as we are passionate to learn, we will.
2) He had a great track record somewhere else.
3) He had something in his personality – call it likeability, call it positive energy, call it attitude.
4) He had passion for our profession.
5) He simply did not do well on interviews, like many other people.
6) He knew a whole lot of things I did not.
We need to stop comparing people to ourselves because our strength is diversity – of opinions, of backgrounds, and knowledge base.
Yes, I took a risk, but I learned that if we do not take risks on people, we are not leaders.
I came to work every day, saw him, and my day brightened every time I saw him because he reminded me of the right decision I made.
It feels really wonderful to do something good for someone else, and in the end, for the team.

6 年Agreed 100%, unfortunately most leaders, managers / supervisor are afraid their subordinate may out shine them so they rather keep them down by playing the "power and who is the boss game". I personally see this a lot in my profession whereby they hire the less qualify and most incompetent person to be the boss. This individual "Boss" then become insecure, jealous, intimidated and become more incompetent around/with the smart employee. The end result is that the company / organization productivity suffers. suffers.
