The secret to a long lasting hot water tank

This is something I wish I had known about long ago regarding extending the lifespan of a hot water tank. The common maintenance that you typically hear of is to flush the hot water tank up to 3 times per year, or at least once per year. Most homeowners aren’t informed about the anode rod and its importance. Here is what the anode rod does:

The anode is a metal rod that is placed in the water heater's interior. The rod protects the steel walls of the tank by attracting minerals and sediment. These rods are made of either magnesium or aluminum. Magnesium is especially effective because of its ability to give electrons more freely than aluminum anodes.

An anode rod protects the interior lining by attracting all corrosive particles to itself through a process called electrolysis. When the rod has corroded to such an extent that it can no longer do its job, those particles settle at the bottom of the water tank, where they may eventually destroy the lining. Once corrosion starts inside the tank, the water heater has entered into its final stage of life.

Smelly or discolored hot water is the biggest sign that something is wrong with your anode rod. When your anode rod has completely corroded, it can no longer protect your hot water heater lining. Your anode rod will go bad every five years or so.

So, what does this mean for the everyday homeowner? Well, I don’t know about you, but personally, life is so busy that I look for solutions that are a” set-it and forget-it” type of thing. Regular anode rods should be replaced every 3-5 years. However there is a powered anode rod made of titanium that stops corrosion and reduces limescale and it is warrantied for 20 years. At about a $200.00 price point, this to me is a great investment.?

The powered anode rod, combined with regular maintenance flushes of the hot water tank, will greatly improve the lifespan of your hot water tank and your wallet will thank you.?

As a big fan of titanium, maybe I should splurge on a new anode rod.
