Secret job hunt strategy I've used to land an interview that 90 percent of job hunters aren't using

In this article, I'll be walking you through a specific job hunt strategy that I've used to land me an interview that 90 percent of job seekers are not using.

I'll show you exactly how you can leverage this strategy to help you get a job and even walk you through exactly what I did so you can replicate it for yourself as well.

The good news is this specific strategy does not involve applying online, reaching out to people on LinkedIn, or going to networking events.

Nope, none of that at all.

So if you're someone who absolutely hates online job portals or feels too overwhelmed to carry yourself over to a networking event then this strategy could be your blessing in disguise.

Ok, I've teased you for long enough.

So what exactly is this strategy?

(Can someone give me a drum roll please?)

It's LinkedIn + Facebook Groups!

Let me explain.

You've probably heard of groups, right?

They're basically online groups on LinkedIn and Facebook where people with common interests or goals bunch together to comment on each other's posts, organize events/meetups, and share gossip.

I'm just kidding about that last part but you can imagine in the context of job hunting these groups are filled with specific people who are already in the job you're trying to get into.

What better way to ask for a job than to ask a concentrated group of people who are already in the job you're trying to get into?

They'll clearly know if there are any job openings within their company and considering that up to 80 percent of jobs aren't even posted online, you'll be able to tap into a hidden job market that 90% of job seekers don't even know about.

For example, let's say you're trying to break into a digital marketing role.

Imagine how killer it would be to put yourself into groups filled with other digital markers and then announce to everyone through a post that you're looking for a job?

Would that not the most effective thing, ever?

How to find groups on LinkedIn and Facebook

Ok, let's get into the tactical stuff.

To find groups on LinkedIn and Facebook click on the search tab on both platforms and then search the type of group you're trying to look for.

Let's say for the sake of example you're trying to find digital marketing groups because you're trying to break into digital marketing.

Refer to the pictures below:

Keep in mind when you've found the right group you're looking for you'll need to request the group admins to join usually.

Often I find that this takes about a day or two to get their approval.

How to use groups

What's great about these groups is the fact that a lot of people are actually posting jobs in these groups as you can see below:

(the one below is from Facebook)

Great, so you know that these groups often have people posting jobs but beyond that, you'll also find that there are people asking questions, sharing insights or just straight up joking around.

But how do you use these groups to get a job, am I right?

You might be thinking "heck, I'm just going to post my resume in the group and hopefully, someone reaches out to me."

This approach MIGHT work but I'd actually recommend you spend a couple of days first adding value to the group first before you go for the big ask.

But, how do you actually do that?

Well, here are a couple of ways:

  • Make posts in the group sharing some valuable insights you've recently learned
  • Comment on people's post so they start getting familiar with you and start liking you
  • Answer people's questions in the comment section

I'd recommend that you do this for a couple of days or so and then once you're ready, make a post asking if anyone is hiring.

Here's the exact post that I made which landed me an interview:

There are a couple of things I'd recommend you include when you're making a post:

  • List out what are some of the most relevant skills and accomplishments you have in a bullet form
  • Be clear with what type of roles you're trying to go for
  • Attach a resume to the post (when I attached my resume I made sure to not include my personal cell number, street address, or anything too personal)

And there you have it.

The magic of LinkedIn and Facebook groups!

I hope you learned a little something from this article!
