The Secret of the Golden Hours

So many things to do and so little time to get everything done. You blink and entire years seem to have slipped past, moments blurring into lengthening streams of images and feelings that make up the threads and colours of your memories. Time is such a precious commodity. So how can we harness more of this rich yet scandalously limited commodity?

Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible;

Let’s start with a very simple question. During the day, do you know when you’re most productive? Do you peak early in the day and then struggle to maintain your momentum as the hours proceed? Or are you an afternoon person? The kind that wakes up after lunch and feels more energised towards the evening? We’re all delightfully different but it’s very helpful to recognise when you’re most creative, clear-headed, focused and efficient. And why might that be useful to you?

Because we rarely sustain our levels of concentration throughout the day. And also, because some hours are far more productive than others, we get more done when we’re functioning with peak efficiency. Have you ever noticed that? Have you ever considered that some hours are clearly more productive for you than others? Knowing when your attention peaks and when your concentration is fully engaged can provide you with major advantages when it comes to planning and delivering on your goals.

Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it.

In identifying when you’re most likely to feel alert, focused and fully in tune with your faculties, you’ll be able to reserve these times specifically for your most important tasks.

If the items that occupy the top slot on your To Do List really deserve to be there, they must also deserve to benefit fully from your best efforts and your highest levels of concentration.

Planning your day so that your key tasks are scheduled for when you’re most likely to be operating at peak efficiency can act as a force multiplier to your day’s agenda, delivering the best results on the most important issues. And that’s a very solid foundation for regular, repeatable levels of success.

Of course, there are always variables that might throw your precious golden hours of peak efficiency out of their regular alignment. Disturbed sleep, stress, fatigue, anger, frustration – it’s amazing how these negative reactions can conspire to throw you off step.

But when you appreciate how important these hours are to your plans, you’ll be very careful to invest the time as wisely as possible. These are not the hours for coffee breaks and friendly chats with colleagues. These are not the times you reserve for admin and routine filing. These are the super-charged times of the day when you feel fully equipped and focused to handle the really important tasks, the items that deliver the results that move you closer towards your goals and dreams.

So, take a moment to reflect on how you feel during the day and make a note of when your focus and energy levels seem to peak. Does it happen for you around the same time every day? Have you just discovered the times when you naturally feel more energised? Start planning your work around these precious times of lucid concentration. They might be some of the most important hours of your life.

There are risks and costs to action.

But they are far less than the long-range risks of comfortable inaction.
