The Secret to Getting Ahead is...

The Secret to Getting Ahead is...

If you’re the parent of a 4 or 5 year old then you know how much our kids like watching "toy unboxing" videos. They could watch them for hours on end if you let them. My son is no exception and a few weeks ago after getting annoyed seeing him glued to the iPad watching “toy unboxings” that seem to always contain bright, sparkly manicured hands, eardrum stabbing high pitched voices and no real substance, I had enough and told him this...

“Elijah why don’t you take a break from being a consumer and consider being a creator? What if you could be the one in the video playing with those toys? They might even send you FREE toys if you're really good."

That day I unknowingly planted a seed in my boy that grew into this video you’re watching now. Yesterday, after a great dentist appointment I decided to spoil him with a $5 toy from the grocery store. He picked this “troll” one and was thrilled to get home to start playing with it. We pulled up to our driveway and before going in he asked...

“dad can you record me please?”

"for what?" I answered

That's when he told me he wanted to use this as an opportunity to become a creator. Without missing a beat I pulled out my iPhone and right before hitting record reassured him with this...

“Son just remember it doesn’t have to be perfect it just has to be YOUR best and remember that everyone who is GREAT at their craft today started at the bottom but they STARTED.”

I’m proud of my son and wanted to share this moment with my LinkedIn network to help inspire you to get started at something you’ve been meaning to do. Dr. Martin Luther King said it best:

“You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.”

Here's Eli's video. Leave your comments below and I'll share them with him :)

Thank you for sharing this insightful article on how to get ahead, Jeff Zelaya. It made me think about the importance of developing strong relationships and building a personal brand in order to succeed in today's competitive job market. One question that came to mind is, what are some practical ways I can begin to build my personal brand and establish myself as a thought leader in my industry?

That was awesome man! Elijah is super cute, but as a father I totally appreciate you planting that seed of creativity in his mind. PS those kids on Youtube that "unbox" for promo make a ton of $$$, who know he might be there next Youtube star!!!!
