Have we overlooked the key to Amazon's triumph due to our preconceived notions? Let's start with a foundational principle: humility is a precursor to true knowledge. Sometimes, our existing beliefs and knowledge can obstruct new learning. This brings forth a crucial question: Do our past beliefs and actions sometimes become the barriers to our future success? In the ever-evolving landscape of today, it's vital not to become trapped behind the event horizon of our own ignorance or arrogance. Personally, I've often been my own biggest obstacle.
Can Amazon's enduring success be attributed to a range of innovative strategies? At the heart of these is perhaps the principle of sacrifice. When customers choose Amazon, they're engaging in a trade, evaluating its worth against alternative options. Perhaps more fully understanding this requires an exploration of Amazon's vast ecosystem and their expertise in choice architecture.
But how does a company entice customers into its ecosystem? The key is delivering what customers genuinely seek: utmost transparency. Equipped with this transparency, from what we see Amazon can effectively model its customers' decision-making processes based on the choices they're presented with. Three main considerations dictate these choices: the effort required for acquisition, the cost of the items, and the assurance of timely delivery. In our opinon this capability allows the owner to play a calculated game, assessing customers' preferences to optimize efforts and guarantee reliability, all while maximizing their own profit margins. They can then do this with the very data we provide, fine-tuning their understanding of our valuation of each aspect.
And as if that weren't enough, the social dynamics of influence further tilt the scale in ecosystem's favor. It's evident there is potential for choice architecture to draw on Robert Cialdini’s 6 Principles of Influence: reciprocity, commitment (also known as consistency), consensus (or social proof), authority, liking, and scarcity. These principles can act as potent amplifiers of customer behavior in amazon’s favor.
Now, if you, like most, lack structured data, don't despair. However, as previously emphasized, time is of the essence. Here, understanding 'customer impedance' becomes paramount. Our team discovered that grasping impedance within an enterprise was the linchpin for developing Automated Reasoning and, ultimately, Special Purpose Intelligence (SPI). Essentially, a customer's decision to engage with a service hinges on three key facets: perceived effort, the value of the item, and the confidence in its prompt acquisition. Each of these factors is weighed against other available choices. A company's ease of doing business is intrinsically tied to its internal impedance, and the 'sacrifice model' quantitatively reveals how it might erode potential profit margins. In brief, that's the crux. If you've encountered some the earlier writings and discussions of Causal Models, Automated Reasoning, and SPIs, their importance is now clearer. They empower you to transition seamlessly to a world where you can emulate the successes of an Amazon-like entity in your domain, without the initial groundwork they undertook. Could you then become what we term a 'Limitless' company, if you aren't already on par with the likes of Amazon?
What exactly is a 'Limitless Company'? Let's delve into a narrative to elucidate this concept for those unfamiliar with the likes of Amazon's prowess. Consider the 2011 sci-fi movie "Limitless," featuring Bradley Cooper. Cooper's character, initially unsuccessful, consumes a novel drug that unlocks the entirety of his brain's potential. This grants him an uncanny ability to recall all past experiences and information, synergizing it with new knowledge. Yet, while his capabilities seem almost digital, they remain constrained by human biology's limits. He's portrayed as a person with a computational edge—a sort of encapsulated superhuman prowess.
It's probable that you're in the throes of some IoT/Data-driven "transformation." Many label this phase as Digital Transformation. Those who've reaped its substantial benefits often discard this label, having redefined and continually refined their approach. However, a significant portion of businesses overlook the necessity of a holistic, enterprise-wide transformation, opting instead for piecemeal changes. This segmented approach inevitably causes ripple effects both upstream and downstream.
Starting off, it's crucial to acknowledge a potential systems conundrum. We're dealing with two distinct systems: one inherently human and the other digital. These systems, while differing starkly in their dynamics (linear versus exponential), are intricately intertwined. For clarity, we'll term them the Human Enterprise (HE) and the Digital Enterprise (DE). Each system has its specific domain elements, fueling value creation and aligning with our conventional thought and interactivity paradigms.
These overlapping systems can be distilled as:
Our inadvertent creation of a systems issue might have remained unnoticed, if not for the revealing nature of data. Data emerges as the subtle disruptor. Visualizing these twin systems as cyclical constructs tailored for our enterprise would depict them as depicted in Figure 1 below.
[Figure 1]
From Figure 1, we discern that the Human and Digital Enterprises intersect, giving rise to two interconnected cycles that set our trajectory towards the future. Consequently, our forward momentum is steered by the institutional functions and processes powered by the human element within the HE domains, namely: More Success, Better Talent, and Leadership Confidence.
A striking takeaway from this representation is our inadvertent shaping of the Digital Enterprise to fit the contours of the human paradigm. While the digital dimension promises unparalleled efficiencies, its potential is hemmed in by its deeply-rooted ties to the Human Enterprise. This results in a noticeable lag.
In essence, we have inadvertently superimposed the digital facet onto our Human Enterprise, engendering pronounced complexities and entanglements. These manifest in our operational realm as Technical Debt and Customer Dissatisfaction.
Having diagnosed our quandaries, it's time to chart the path forward. Potential resolutions could encompass:
·????????Excising the human component entirely.
·????????Generating value commensurate with data proliferation.

·????????Untangling the Human and Digital Enterprises for streamlined operations. (Drawing inspiration from an Amazon-like model)
To envision this, let's contemplate an alternate interplay of these cycles that resonates with the aforementioned criteria, as showcased in Figure 2.
[Figure 2]
Imagine a scenario where we amplify the DE's prowess by decoupling it from the confines of the HE. The sole nexus between them would be the mutual avenue of "More Investment," either through talent acquisition or technological innovation. This augmentation propels data science into the realm of AI. The newly realized digital cycle, tethered only to its intrinsic pathway to the future, metamorphoses into the Digital Limitless Enterprise (DLE). Its constitutive elements now encompass AI, more success, increased investment, and a compounding data landscape.
Intriguingly, with its constraints of being intertwined with the road to the future removed, the erstwhile HE evolves into the Human Limitless Enterprise (HLE). It functions as a pivotal force multiplier via its talent and infuses vigor into the DLE through sustained "more investment." This structural shift liberates the human intellect, enabling it to wield its unique knowledge arsenal. The outcome? An enterprise transformation that not only keeps pace with data growth but transcends it, epitomizing what AI maestro Arthur Kordon dubs as "Super-Exponential." The visual representation of this paradigm shift can be observed in Figure 3.
[Figure 3]
To actualize our potential solution, we must undergo a pivotal shift in our Frame-of-Reference. Grasping the implications of Figure 3 is paramount, as it delineates the chasm between entrenched practices and aspirational goals.
This transformative journey is one that we need to personally traverse to genuinely comprehend and champion. External guidance, while valuable, can't replace firsthand enlightenment – of understanding how Amazon is so hard to beat.
Reconfiguring one's frame of reference is a deeply contextual process. Intriguingly, this reorientation commences with recognizing the formidable dynamo behind our challenges: the relentless, exponential surge of data. If our enterprises lag in leveraging the knowledge you have and value springing from this data, we're merely treading water in a fast-moving stream. The ensuing chasm between potential and actuality only expands.
In "The Exponential Age," Azeem Azhar compellingly argues for an engaged embrace of emergent technologies and the deluge of data. Ignoring these assets not only squanders opportunities but also places companies on a treacherous slope to obsolescence.
Your enterprise stands on the cusp of unparalleled growth, deeply intertwined with technology and data. By aligning the strength of human insight with digital capability, imagine a scenario where your organization's vast wisdom across all facets is transformed instantly by the power of compute. This isn't mere speculation; it's grounded in the teachings of Judea Pearl, visions of Kordon, the range of a team of absolute wizards, and the tools of companies like parabole.ai . With "Knowledge-Based Cognitive Automation," you can have the tools to redefine automation of decision-making, echoing the transformative essence of Amazon-like "Limitless."
It's a pivotal moment: the digital world doesn't pause, and neither should you. Understanding Amazon's success is one thing; emulating it is another. It's about harnessing data, reimagining processes, and propelling your enterprise into its limitless potential. Now is the moment to act, to evolve, and to become a beacon of "Super-Exponential" dynamism. Don't just aspire to be like the giants—become the next one. Embrace your enterprise's limitless potential and set forth on this transformative journey today. Time is not on your side!

1 年You bring many concepts together in this extensive analysis, Michael Carroll! The notion of entanglement between a human way and a digital way of operating is crucial. Your disentanglement concept is a bit the equivalent of the "entrainment concept," like a power transmission belt. Building on this idea, too often, we tend to digitalize or automate following a human model of doing things. However, this is very suboptimal; it's much better to redesign the process from scratch, allowing it to streamline, speed up, add value, and optimize cost. Thanks, Serge
