I am often impressed by presentations with precise, clear, and direct delivery, showcasing excellent oratory skills. We admire such speakers for their sensible and meaningful talks. This is also true on social media, where crisp, relatable messages attract followers.
Have you ever wondered how these presenters or authors manage to convey their messages so effectively, tailored perfectly for their audience?
I recently invited a distinguished woman leader to a Global Listening Session organized by our company. She has held senior executive roles in major organizations worldwide and is a great orator and writer. I have long admired her practical, experience-based messages.
My admiration grew as I saw her prepare for our session. Months in advance, she took steps to understand our audience, structure, and what would add value. She meticulously framed her topic, fine-tuning it and checking with us to ensure its relevance.
On the final day, her well-prepared presentation attracted a huge audience and received rave reviews. Reflecting on this, I realized that although she is a popular leader who could have delivered an impromptu speech by sharing experiences, she chose not to. Instead, she opted for thorough preparation, which made all the difference.

I firmly believe in being prepared for any occasion because it demonstrates credibility and respect for your audience's time, and ensures your message is clear and valuable.
An early career experience reinforced my belief in the importance of preparation. During a customer forum with leaders from over 15 client companies, I was assigned to present an initiative. The day after receiving this task, my manager asked me to present it to him. I hadn't reviewed the content yet, thinking I had time, and struggled through the presentation. My manager's disappointment, which I later realized was meant to motivate me, left a lasting impact.
With three weeks to prepare, I committed to intense daily preparation, ensuring I could address any customer questions. On the day of the event, I was the last to present in a crowded conference room. Customers were not in good spirits after a service review, but I remained confident.
As I began, the room fell silent. Gaining confidence from the customers' attentive expressions, I delivered my presentation smoothly. By the end, I received a huge round of applause, with customers stating my initiative was exactly what they had been seeking for years. Seeing my manager’s approving smile was incredibly rewarding.
This experience taught me a valuable lesson: thorough preparation instils immense confidence, allowing you to tackle any challenge that comes your way.

7 个月Well said Lakshmi Das. I believe, knowing your stuff which is hugely depended upon knowing your audience combined with lot of rehearsals is the perfect blend. Gone are the days, when presentations were random collection of slides. Presentations are no more just presentation, it is a story that is told.

7 个月That's quite a topic Lakshmi ?? I had instances where I was equally awed at presenters who prepared well in advance as well as those who did an impromptu wonderful delivery. The secret I believe is knowledge. That makes a huge difference ??
