Secret to Control Valve Datasheet made in 10 Mins

Secret to Control Valve Datasheet made in 10 Mins

You are about to surprise your boss.

You are sitting in at your desk.

Your Boss has a broad smile and few gray hairs.

He looks into your eyes.

and asks this question.

In How much time can you prepare Control Valve Datasheet

What if your answer causes your boss to raise his eyebrows in surprise.

You answer (Unbelievably) "in 10 mins".

This is Possible.

If you develop a System Behind Selection and know Engineering Standards very well.

We will be covering this in the Webinar this coming week on 19 Jan 2025.

You can register you email here: Control Valve Datasheet Preparation Webinar - ASAD SHAIKH

And You will receive an email link to join the Webinar + My Excel list of all Valve Standards (For Free)

And below is a Sneek peek in what we will cover the webinar.

System behind Selection Process (In Steps)

Step 1: Control Valve Selection

The most common valves are the following

  • Butterfly Valve
  • Globe Valve
  • Segmented Ball Valve
  • Segmented Plug Valve

You Might Notice that Oil & Gas Companies are more prone to use Globe Valves, Pulp & Paper prefers Segment Plug Valves and Water Processing industries might prefer butterfly valves.

There is a deep thought process before selecting a Valve Type.

And we will explore that in depth in the webinar. (Control Valve Datasheet Preparation Webinar - ASAD SHAIKH)

Step 2: Control Valve Trim Selection

When it gets to Trim selection, things get even more interesting (Especially for Globe Valve)

You have the below type of trim selection variable.

  • Unbalanced Trim
  • Balanced Trim
  • Linear Trim
  • Equal Percentage Trim
  • Quick Opening Trim
  • Cage Guided Trim
  • Plug Guided Trim
  • Single Port Trim
  • Dual Port Trim

The most important parameter that influence this are Differential Pressure across valve, Dirty / Clean Fluid, Is the DP fluctuating, line Size, type of application.

We will try to develop a flowchart that makes this selection easy in the webinar (Control Valve Datasheet Preparation Webinar - ASAD SHAIKH).

Step 3: Control Valve Material Selection

We would explore what material is better for a particular application.

And also understand the material naming standards.

?? ASTM Standards

ASTM is the most in-depth when it comes to material names.

ASTM basically segregates them on the basis of how we obtain the material like Forging, Casting and it form like Plates etc

let us take example of SS 316 material in ASTM format

The Forged Version of SS316 is called : A182 Gr. F316

The Cast Version of SS316 is called : A351 Gr. CF3M

You might now have this question

?? Why separate? Forging or Casting ?

Forging involves shaping the metal using compressive forces, typically at high temperatures.

(??) Similar to Hammering a material to the shape required

This grade typically has a finer grain structure and improved mechanical properties compared to casting grades

Casting involves pouring molten metal into a mold to achieve the desired shape.

This grade may have a coarser grain structure and slightly different mechanical properties compared to forging grades.

Now let's look at the next type of naming system

What is UNS system?

The UNS (Unified Numbering System) designation consists of a letter followed by five digits, providing a unique identifier for each material. For stainless steels, the letter "S" is used.

This does not further segregate in forging or casting.

So each material will have a unique name.

For stainless steels, the letter "S" is used.

UNS S31600: The UNS designation for SS 316 is S31600.

UNS S31603: The UNS designation for SS 316L is S31603.

(SS 316L is a low-carbon version of SS 316)

UNS S30400: The UNS designation for SS 304 is S30400

This identifier is used across various standards and specifications to ensure consistency.

UNS S31600 covers the chemical composition and basic properties of SS 316, regardless of the specific manufacturing process (Forging / Casting etc)

?? DIN Naming Standards

The DIN is the German Institute for Standardization.

It is similar to UNS and each material will have a unique name.

DIN 1.4401: The DIN designation for SS 316 is 1.4401

DIN 1.4404: The DIN designation for SS 316L is 1.4404

Do you want to know more about material like what is Dual Certified SS316 etc.

Reply to this email and I will cover in coming newsletters.

Further Information: I am not a Material Science engineer; you can consult material engineer for specific project scenarios.

We will learn in depth in the webinar (Control Valve Datasheet Preparation Webinar - ASAD SHAIKH)

Step 4: Control Valve Calculation

Here is a quick overview of points that “must” be checked in any CV calcualton.

?? Point 1: CV between 20% to 80%

The calculated CV of the valve must be within 20 to 80% of the rated CV.

?? Point 2: Cavitation / Flashing

Is there cavitation present? If yes, then what solution has the vendor taken to mitigate it?

?? Point 3: Valve Noise

Is the noise within the valve in acceptable limits?

Generally, 85dBA is considered acceptable.

If no, then what solution has the vendor taken to mitigate it?

?? Point 4: Valve Outlet Velocity

Is the valve outlet velocity within acceptable limits?

Valve outlet velocity is the fluid velocity at the discharge flange of a control valve.

Let's take reference from PIP International Standard (Complete Std Name: PCCCV001 Section 4.7.2).

The outlet velocity shall not be greater than the following:

a. 0.3 Mach for gas, vapor, and steam services

b. 0.4 Mach for infrequent services

c. 33 ft/sec for liquid services other than water

d. 18 ft/sec for water service

e. 20 ft/sec for erosive fluid (erosive particles).
