A Secret Castle inside Cave !
The Predjama castle is a appealing renaissance castle built in the mouth of the cave. It is located in the Predjama village, approximately 11 kilometres from the town of Postojna?and 9 kilometres from Postojna Cave, Slovenia. This 13th century Gothic style castle was considered impenetrable. The castle was built on a naturally rocky arch high in the stone wall to make the access more difficult.
Although the castle has seen many rulers controlling it but one of the infamous stories is about Erazem Lueger, lord of the castle in the 15th century and a renowned?robber baron. He was the son of the imperial governor of?Trieste, Nikolaj Lueger.
According to the history, Erazem came into conflict with the Habsburgs?when he killed the commander of the imperial army, Marshal Pappenheim, who had offended the honour of Erasmus's deceased friend and famous condottiere Andrej Baumkircher of Vipava. From there, he allied himself with King Matthias Corvinus?and began to attack Habsburg estates. Much to annoyance of Frederick III, the Holy Roman Emperor, with the strength of all of his forces, Frederick came after Lueger, and commissioned the capture or killing of Erasmus.
Despite the Emperor’s superior forces, the rebellious Lueger had both brains and a secret tunnel between the castle and the nearby Postojna Cave. For an entire year and one day, Lueger snuck out of the castle and replenished food and drink through the tunnel from a nearby town. Finally, after surviving for so many days, one of his servants sold him out. One morning as Lueger came to use the toilet on a high floor of the outside face of the castle, the servant signalled and the cannon blast killed the baron in the toilet.
