The Secret to Accomplishing More

The Secret to Accomplishing More

Dear Friends,

Do you find it difficult to negotiate the trade-off between work and rest?

It's easy to respond to our unending stream of tasks by simply powering through. Schedule an extra meeting, make one more call, answer just one more email.

While this may seem to be the best way to accomplish our goals, it’s often counterproductive.

Taking time to rest and rejuvenate is an essential part of success.

On this week's episode of the What's Essential podcast, I speak with John Hope Bryant, the founder of Operation HOPE, a nonprofit whose mission is to expand economic opportunity to underserved communities.

With a purpose that important, it’s easy to see why John can find it challenging to take time to rest and recharge. But he also understands it is mission critical. He explains it this way:

“I'm renewing myself. I'm using different muscles...I'm breathing God's air. I'm communing, not with people on Zoom, [but] with nature. I'm not in charge of anything. Whereas in my daily life, I'm in charge of too many things.”

When we fail to take time to recharge, we quickly reach a point of diminishing returns.

Here’s how you can rejuvenate today:

  1. Select an activity that rejuvenates you (e.g. walking, yoga, meditation)
  2. Block 30 minutes on your schedule to stop and recharge

As we take time to rest and renew, we will find we accomplish more of what matters with less effort.

With gratitude,

Greg

Greg McKeown, in an industry that still clings to the almighty billable hour and crazy workhours during the busy season, one of the best moves we made a decade ago was to set a goal to limit staff workhours, insist on staff getting away from the desk, and focus on completion of work. When I started in accounting the joke was to say goodbye to your wife and kids when you left the house Jan 2 and reintroduce yourself on April 16th. We have found so much more success and happiness in shedding that approach.

So true! Consider this....Taking time to relax provides the same benefits to your brain as pushing the restart button does for your computer.
