SECR - How do you pronounce it, let alone comply.

I've heard multiple versions of how to pronounce SECR, some being "SeeKR" , "SEKra", "S-E-R-C". However does it matter how you enunciate the abbreviated version, its still the Streamlined Energy & Carbon Reporting legislation, if you qualify its mandatory and if you don't complete it then your annual company report to Companies House will not be complete and you can get fined.

The lastest I've heard on fines is a company that didn't comply with ESOS has just been fined ￡90,000 AND will have daily fine until they comply. Considering the most expensive ESOS compliance report I've seen was around ￡46k (and that included auditing a gas and coal power station) so it seems a false economy.

So what are the fines and implications of not completing a compliant report, which includes reporting an intensity metric relevant to your business and a narrative specifically about what energy efficiency measures you have completed and planned, likely to be. At this time the size of fines and how Company House will deal with non-compliance isn't clear but as nobody has to report until Dec 2020 means it will be a while before we know.

The first companies due to report will have a Financial Year of April 2019 to March 2020. They have 9 months to submit their annual report to Company House but due to Covid 19 a 3 month extension has been declared which means you have 12 months from April 2020 to comply and submit your report.

We are already in August 2020 so that means if you've done nothing you have just over 6 months to collect your data, create a relevant intensity metric and write your narrative. Considering only Large companies need to comply that usually means its not a day or two work, so best get planning now.
