The Second Wife Episode Six

Nina stepped into the living room with the fried rice and chicken in her hands. Her heart was beating very fast as she hoped that Lily would eat the poisoned food. As she entered the room, Lily was still sitting in the living room and waiting for her.

"Here's the food ma." Nina said as she handed the food to Lily. Inwardly, Nina was extremely sad, but also happy as she thought she was about to get rid of her problem once and for all. Lily took the food from her without saying a word.

Immediately after Nina gave the food to Lily, she left the room. Her hope is that by the she returns, Lily would have died. However, when she left the room, Lily did not just start eating the food. She has been eating fried rice for a long time and she knows when there's a discoloration in it. She noticed some dark substances on the food and her instincts told her not to eat it.

Lily decided to see if the food was poisonous. She went to the apartment she had used at the boys quarters. When she moved into the apartment days ago, she had seen some rats there. She was sure the rats must have returned now that she has left the apartment.

"Let me feed them with the food." Lily said as she placed the plate of delicious fried rice on the cupboard inside the kitchen. She returned to the main building to look for something else to eat.

When Nina reemerged from her room to check on Lily, she was surprised to see that she was still alive.

"Have you finished eating?" Nina asked Lily with surprise on her face. She thought by that time, Lily should have been dead.

"Yes dear. Thanks very much for going to buy the food for me. I appreciate the way you have been taking good care of me since I returned to the main house." Lily said appreciatively.

Nina was surprised to see Lily alive and well. She also seemed happier as nothing had happened to her.

"Are you sure you ate the food? Did you finish it? I mean the fried rice and chicken that I just bought for you. Did you eat it?" Nina asked Lily again. She was carefully using her eyes to survey Lily to see if she was showing any signs of illness, but she saw none of that.

"I said I have finished the food. Why are you so curious about the rice? Is anything the matter? I have finished the food and disposed the plate. The fried rice and chicken taste very nice and I enjoyed everything thoroughly. But why are you asking?" Lily said. Nina's curiosity over the food had confirmed to Lily that she poisoned it.

"I'm just curious that you finished it so fast. I was wondering if it was too small for you. I wanted to know if you are satisfied. I could bring some more food for you from the kitchen. I made egusi soup, I promise you will like it." Nina said, but Lily declined.

"I don't want any more food Nina. I'm satisfied with what I just ate. I mean, the fried rice was so good." Lily lied. Nina had no option than to leave her alone.

Two days later, Lily went to her former apartment at the boys quarters to check the food she kept there for the rats. Immediately she opened the door, she started perceiving the offensive odour of dead rats. She went to the kitchen and as she was checking around, she saw two dead rats under the kitchen sink.

"This girl wanted to kill me. Thanks to God I'm wiser than her. I have survived." Lily said. She checked the food she had kept for the rats and saw it was gone.

"My instincts were right. Nina poisoned the food." Lily said. She called Nina into the boys quarters.

"You poisoned the food you bought for me the other day. Don't deny it. I have evidence to prove that the food was poisonous. Look at the rats! They are dead after eating the food. So you wanted to kill me right?" Lily asked furiously.

"I...I....I..." Nina wanted to say something but ended up stammering all through.

"Well, I now have a third secret about you. I'm holding you in my hands. Any day you try me, I'm going to expose everything to my husband and you will be kicked out of the house. By the way, I don't want to ever eat anything you touched. You are wicked. I know you might want to try to kill me again." Lily said.

Later that day, Lily started thinking critically.

"Why is it that immediately Nina went outside and ate honey with another man, she got pregnant? Does it mean something is wrong with my husband? I have been telling him to go for a medical checkup up all these years and she has refused. People are thinking the problem is from me. What if my husband is the problem? It took Nina only one month to get pregnant after she allowed her driver to eat her honey. Should I try the same method? If I allow another man to eat honey with me, I might get pregnant. I think that is what I'm going to do." Lily said. Her mind was made up.

"But which man should I use? I don't have a boyfriend like Nina. That girl is so wise and fast. She did not wait for my husband to do it. She just acted fast and secured her place in the house. I'm the unwise one who has been waiting for twelve years. But now, I'm willing to try new things. If not, I will lose my place in this house because of childlessness. But how can I find a man to do this for me?" Lily asked herself.

"I think I should use the same man Nina used. I will do it with Nina's driver. Beginning from this night, I will pay him a visit." Lily said.
