Second Semester Underway: Exciting Things Ahead
Having the first semester of college under my belt is a great feeling, but the work is nowhere close to finished. My peers and I are in the midst of spring semester. While my first semester grades were good, as I had a 3.44 first semester GPA, I like to set a high standard for myself as I aspire to be the best student, best worker, and best person I can be. While I am still early on in my college experience, I have a few plans as to how I can continue my academic and social success and how I can elevate them, as well.
One of the best things that has happened to me here at Syracuse University, thus far, is the fact that I am living in the Sport Analytics Learning Community amongst 31 of my peers. Not only did we all become very good friends early on, but it is very beneficial to have at least one person from the learning community in all of my classes. So not only did I get socially acclimated early on here, but it has also improved my academic experience, as well, allowing me to do homework, study, and consult my peers. I fully intend to continue to use my peers as a resource to further my knowledge in my classes, as well as outside the classroom to better prepare myself for what lies ahead.
Another resource I am going to continue to utilize this semester is the advisors and professors in my major. I had the opportunity to get to meet a lot of them during my first semester here at Syracuse and they have done nothing but welcome me with open arms. They have a plethora of knowledge both in sports topics and in the industry as a whole. Not only did I vastly expand my knowledge on the sport industry in my first semester, but I intend to use that knowledge in this semester, in the summer at my potential internship, my entire tenure here, and one day in the workplace.
One thing that the entire faculty here at Syracuse preaches continuously is the fact that we always need to be networking. This, to me, has been the biggest difference between high school and college. This semester, especially as I continue my internship search, I want to put this advice into action by reaching out to industry professionals and to those who have connections. I am lucky to go to a school that has such a deep, devoted, and broad alumni network, especially in the sport industry. I want to stay committed to continue to reach out to people and expand my LinkedIn network so I can acquire as much knowledge as possible as I begin my #FreshStart into the sport industry.
All in all, my first year here at Syracuse University has been the opportunity of a lifetime. I have met some incredible people and have gotten advice from numerous people that I truly feel will propel me to where I want to be down the road. The help of my peers, the advice from my advisors and professors, and the information I gather from my connections will hopefully equip me with everything I need going forward. I look forward to sticking to this plan and utilizing these resources as I continue to connect to professionals and expand my LinkedIn network.
