Uber and Waymo announced a surprise settlement on the fifth day of a trial that was expected to last at least two weeks. Uber has agreed to pay Waymo roughly $245 million and also not use any of its trade secrets in hardware or software. Waymo had accused Uber of stealing confidential information via former employee Anthony Levandowski, who allegedly took 14,000 files with him when he left the Alphabet subsidiary. Levandowski’s self-driving truck startup was acquired by Uber in 2016. ? Share your thoughts: #WaymoVsUberTrial
The second government shutdown of 2018 is over — almost before it began. President Trump signed a two-year budget deal into law early Friday morning that includes a stopgap measure to fund the government through March 23. Earlier, the Senate failed to approve the bill in time for the midnight Thursday deadline — leading to the second government shutdown of the year. ? Share your thoughts: #GovtShutdownFeb8
Amazon is launching a delivery service, reports The Wall Street Journal. It will be called “Shipping with Amazon” and will pick up packages from businesses and ship them to customers. The service will be tested in Los Angeles with third-party merchants that sell goods on Amazon, then rolled out to cities across the US. The new venture puts Amazon into direct competition for the parcel business with UPS and FedEx, writes The Journal. Amazon is planning to undercut both on pricing, although exact figures are not yet known. ? Share your thoughts: #AmazonDelivery
The Dow rebounded 300 points after plunging into correction territory on Thursday with a more than 1,000-point drop. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq composite also both opened more than 1% higher this morning. Stocks have had a turbulent ride since last week, when a positive jobs report and news of rising wages sparked fears of inflation and higher interest rates. By Thursday's close, the Dow had shed more than 10% of its value from the high reached in January. ? Share your thoughts: #DowDive
The 23rd Winter Olympics kicks off in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Hours before today’s opening ceremony, the Court of Arbitration for Sport rejected the appeal of a ban on 47 Russian athletes and coaches from competing; Russia has been banned from competing as a nation following a state-sponsored doping scandal. 169 Russian athletes will still be allowed to perform as neutrals. This year’s athletes are not only competing against each other, but against the cold — it could be the chilliest Olympics ever. ? Share your thoughts: #Pyeongchang2018
Idea of the Day: If your team isn’t meeting your expectations, the problem might be you, says Harvard Business Review writer Andy Molinsky. “Are you micromanaging your team in such a way that they have little chance of ever meeting your standards? Are you limiting the growth of your team - and of yourself - by over-controlling the process?”
“Find a middle ground. Instead of being cc-ed on every email, ask to be cc-ed only on certain types of emails. Or instead of checking in with your team at your current rate, cut that by a third.”
