Second Edition Launched!

Second Edition Launched!

The first edition of?Subtle Acts of Exclusion?was published?on March 10, 2020. Some big things have happened since then!?

The second edition of the book launched yesterday, September 19, 2023. I don't know if you're feeling anything like I am these days. I find myself motivated to fly into the middle of things and make up for pandemic time, but I'm also struggling to find my balance in this newly social world. I am determined to fight fiercely for DEI despite noticing many people and organizations stepping back from this hard work. There are so many direct attacks on DEI right now, paired with a quiet lull that feels a little off. All of it channels my thinking toward?innovation and creativity in the space -?to spark action, to align people with common language and goals, and to gently but firmly hold people and organizations accountable.?

The second edition of Subtle Acts of Exclusion has arrived at the perfect time for that. Join me and Dr. Jana to talk about all of this and more next week, September 27, 2023 at 2:00pm EST. It's free, but you must register here at this link.

Please share with any colleagues or friends who you think might want to join us as well.

Here's what you'll find in the second edition of the book:

[1]?Updated SAE examples following huge events like the racial uprisings after the murder of George Floyd, the tragedy and social isolation of the COVID pandemic and remote work / return to work following the worst parts of the pandemic. (I didn't say the end of the pandemic since I think almost everyone has COVID right now!)

[2]?Lessons we have learned from three years of keynotes, workshops, eLearning and consulting with organizations to increase inclusion by addressing Subtle Acts of Exclusion. We describe case studies of how organizations have embraced and implemented the frameworks in the book. Those examples may give you a roadmap toward a more inclusive culture in your own organization.

[3]?A detailed case study written by Dr. Rosa Colon-Kolacko in her role as Chief Diversity Equity and Inclusion Officer at Tufts Medicine, about how the five hospitals in the Tufts Medicine network have been implementing the SAE framework over the past 16 months. Hear how adopting the SAE framework can work for more inclusive leadership, collaboration, and care delivery in her own words.

[4]?A full discussion / activity guide for group conversations among employees or community member. This can be especially helpful for supporting people who want to?facilitate these important and sensitive conversations but who may not be DEI experts themselves.

[5]. Even more practical guidelines. We?expanded the chapter on Intentional Acts of Inclusion to provide more solutions, for individuals, for teams, and for organizations to build cultures and systems for equity and inclusion for all.?

I mentioned above feeling the need to address DEI in more creative and innovative ways. In that spirit, earlier this year my colleagues Gloria Cotton and Thomas Barnette and I created a?DEI FAQ Video Toolkit.?We took 24 questions that we hear again and again - things like "Why is everyone putting pronouns on email signatures" and "I'm a straight white guy. Why should I care about DEI?" and "How can I be more inclusive for people with disabilities?" and we answer them in short 4-8 minute conversational videos which can be hosted on your LMS or ours. In honor of the book launch, we're dramatically cutting licensing fees on those for the next 30 days. They can function as an on-ramp for building?some essential foundational shared understanding, and we want to spread that widely. Click on the video below to see a 90-second?promo video so you can get a feel for the toolkit. We also deliver discussion starters for each video.

Be well, everyone! Hope to see you soon during our webinar next week, and reach out anytime.

All the best,

Michael

Glad to see the next evolution of this work. It is pivotal in bringing awareness to those on the journey, new to the journey, and questioning the need for the journey. Thank you and Dr. Tiffany Jana.
