Seattle DJC: Ready for a revolution in urban transportation?
My colleague Mike Usen was recently approached by the Seattle Daily Journal of Commerce (DJC) to write an article on some of the upcoming issues and changes that he sees coming in the transportation industry. Mike wrote what I feel to be a really compelling article, with a great visual storyline that I think all readers can relate to. If the subject matter (and the particular article/report that Mike references) sounds familiar, you may have seen some of my earlier LinkedIn comments about the same report.
What used to be the rantings of a few of us predicting massive change in the mobility space, are now becoming the normal conversation around this transportation revolution. (Which makes a lot of us feel better, because nobody really wants to be accused of ranting, especially when the accusations are fair ;-)
The changes discussed in these articles won't all happen overnight. They won't happen in the same way from city to city. They won't happen the same way between cities and suburbs, and they won't happen in the same way or timeline in our rural areas. The only thing that we know for sure, is that we don't know exactly when or how these different changes are going to start to manifest themselves. But make no mistake; these changes are coming. We need to continue to push this conversation so that we find the right balance of policy, appropriately applied regulation and in some cases even legislation, to make sure that this transformation brings as many of the benefits as possible while doing our best to limit the negative outcomes. I'll leave it there for now, the article stands enough on its own and its a quick read, so I suggest you give it a scan.
Enjoy, and let the conversation continue!

7 年I think that this was a very sensible article. There is too much boosterism of technology. But I most also say that the technology boosters are winning the day with elected officials and research agencies. There is lots of public money for technology development and very little for basic research on space consumption and anticipating unforeseen consequences that could inform public policy.
