The Seat of Judgement
It is tempting to sit in the judgement seat and put on the garb of the moral police when it comes to the preferences and choices of those around us. It’s as if we slip into a religious coma and conveniently forget the grace, mercy and compassion that Jesus continually showed us in our darkest and most broken places.
We are darkly and strangely comforted when others fall or fail. We hardly perceive and yet relish the endorphin release that accompanies the setbacks of those we inwardly envy. “My how the mighty have fallen” is the motto of the arrogant and pride-laden religious person.
Righteous judgement, on the other hand, is driven by the sobering reality of, “but for the grace of God there go I.” Righteous judgement always speaks the truth in love and compassion with a desire for the other’s best outcome. It is not about comforting myself in another’s failure, but it is always about Jesus’ life being expressed in and through me for the good and betterment of those I may disagree with morally, politically and spiritually.
This would be a good moment for a heart check. Ask these questions: 1. Have I climbed into the seat of judgement regarding the moral, political and spiritual choices of others? 2. Do I secretly delight in the failures and setbacks of those I disagree with? 3. Have I inwardly usurped Jesus from His throne and placed my choices, preferences and standards above His?
Be honest. Be ruthless with yourself. Be quick to repent and change your direction. The Helper (Holy Spirit) is here to walk you through the process of relinquishing your crown and placing Jesus back on the throne where He belongs. May we always follow the lead of love for His glory, His honor and His kingdom.
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit that brings life made you free from the law that brings sin and death. Romans 8:1-2
Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into Him who is the Head, that is, Christ. Ephesians 4:15
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. John 3:17
