The personal is always political; you can't divorce the two.
This week I started writing my year-end newsletter for LinkedIn [ apologies it's still incomplete] where I usually prefer to write about neutral topics on leadership insights and professional coaching aspects.
However, there's no denying that amid the interconnectedness of our personal experiences, everything always arrives back at the larger social and political issues consuming our world today. Politics is every-day you leave your front door. Nobody escapes its socio-economic outfall. It's on display everywhere we look. 2024 has certainly been a year like that here in New Zealand and globally!
I've always aimed to encourage readers, to recognize the political implications of their personal lives, and to understand that our personal liberation is so intertwined with our collective liberation, that we can't ignore the crossover between the two. Living in both realms is an important way of life for me, as how else will we develop a stronger voice for ourselves, if we aren't conscious of world events around us.
As we wind down for Christmas, the importance of rest clearly emphasizes the significance of personal self-care and self-preservation, in the face of everything we've bravely navigated this year. I have a friend who spent most of this year, recuperating between hospitals, after braving several life-threatening operations. All he wants, is to finally go home to his own personal space, but he'll still be recuperating in hospital for Christmas. I feel gratitude for surviving this year, despite being subjected to the public health wait-list for the past 12 months, like so many of my fellow New Zealanders, waiting for surgery in the agonising public health system!
It's during this holiday break, the need for us to prioritize our wellbeing and to find ways to rejuvenate and replenish ourselves for the new year ahead becomes so vital. The days between Christmas and New Year, when we tend to forget what day of the week it is, remains a good time for personal reflection. We all look forward to leaving the busyness of the world behind, just to be silent and in our own spiritual awareness for a while. I love this silence it usually births fresh ideas within me.
Have a Peaceful Christmas and New Year surrounded by whanau and friends!
[I've still got lots to do, because I usually live in denial until about Christmas Eve.]
Warm regards,
Isadore xx
