Seasons of Change: Winter
When we think about change, we often imagine Spring. A time of fresh starts, new opportunities, and growth. Or Summer, when momentum is high and everything seems to be in full bloom. But what about Winter?
Winter is often seen as a season of stillness, a time when nature slows down and the world feels quieter. But beneath the surface, Winter is when the real work happens. Seeds rest underground, preparing to break through in the months ahead. Trees conserve their energy, shedding what no longer serves them. This season isn’t about quick wins; it’s about deep preparation.
And the same applies to us.
The Power of Winter in Change
Change doesn’t happen overnight. Before the new job, the big move, the business launch, or the personal transformation, there’s a period of reflection, planning, and foundation-setting.
That’s Winter.
Instead of seeing this season as a time of stagnation, we should embrace it as the most strategic phase of change. Winter is when we get honest about where we are, clarify where we want to be, and build a plan to get there.
How to make the most of your winter season
Whether you’re going through a career shift, business transformation, or personal reinvention, here’s how to embrace your Winter season:
?? Pause and Reflect – What’s working? What isn’t? Before rushing ahead, take stock of where you are.
?? Define Your Vision – Where do you want to be in six months? A year? Get clear on what success looks like for you.
?? Create a Strategy – Big changes need a plan. What small steps can you take now to set yourself up for success?
?? Let Go of What No Longer Serves You – Just like trees shed their leaves, Winter is the perfect time to release old habits, commitments, or mindsets that no longer align with your next chapter.
Spring is just around the corner
Preparing for Spring means using this Winter season wisely. The work you do now, reflecting, strategising, and letting go, sets the stage for what’s next. When Spring arrives, it’s not just about action... it’s about testing ideas, experimenting with new approaches, and embracing what we’ve learned during Winter. Spring is when we start to see what works and refine our direction before fully committing.
Change feels easier when you’ve done the groundwork.
In April, I’ll be sharing more about the Spring season of change — how to experiment, adapt, and move forward with confidence.

Great share Lucy Grimwade. I love all that you said. What resonated with me most was to "Pause and Reflect". I find this to be an underrated thing to do, but it makes such a positive impact to clear our heads and drive momentum forward. Thank you.
