A seasoning called analysis.
I have a very humble dream. Just as history is divided into BC and AC, history of literature education is divided into BS(Before SEO) and AS(After SEO). That is all.
Often, spraying a food with a certain seasoning changes the taste completely. The role of analysis in literature is the same as this seasoning.
There is something I tell my students at the start of every semester in the IBDP course.
"You must have read a work called XXXX during last vacation. Now I'm going to sprinkle the seasoning called Annalysis on it. Let's see how it changes the taste of the work."
And I explain the symbolism contained in the character's lines and actions. The key to my analysis is to doubt the narrator. If in a work the narrator says 'A is B', readers have believed it until now. In fact, in most works, there is no problem doing so. However, in some works, the narrator is lying to the readers. Therefore, I suspect that 'although the narrator says A is B, is it true?' British novel Jane Eyre and Korean novel Our Twisted Hero are exactly the same. If the narrator is lying, a new question arises.
"Why did the narrator lie to us?"
Answering this question reveals the opposite face that the work was hiding. Then I ask the students again.
"Why is analysis needed in literature?"
