The Seasoned Voice: Sharing Wisdom to Guide the Next Generation

Life is about constant change. In recent years, we have seen pivots and transitions across many arenas, haven’t we? As a voracious reader and observer of these shifts throughout my decades of work—and now in my ten years as a full-time writer and publisher—one truth remains clear: the positions that leaders of all stripes have worked so hard to attain eventually change. The door to that space eventually closes, as the flowing river of time and change never stops.
A Familiar Story
I recently spoke with an executive who will be retiring soon. After decades of leading teams and shaping the future of his company, he expressed a deep desire to continue making a difference, even as he steps away from his official role. He is accustomed to leadership and still has so much to share. In our conversation, I talked to him about taking those thirty years of experience and shifting how his mentorship and knowledge will be used. Writing, I explained, opens doors to opportunities he simply did not have time to explore while managing the demands of his position. It is not only a way to preserve his legacy but to also continue guiding the next generation of leaders.
I wanted to discuss this topic after observing a noticeable trend of seasoned executives and leaders across various industries closing the door on their professional roles, raising concerns that their voices might soon fade away. Instead of quietly disappearing, it is worth reminding these individuals that an exciting new journey awaits those who want to stay relevant and engaged in a different way.
Finding Purpose Beyond the Boardroom
For those who have spent decades steering companies and making critical decisions, retirement can feel like a double-edged sword. On one hand, it is an opportunity to step back and enjoy the fruits of a long career. On the other, it can leave a void—one that is often filled with questions about purpose and relevance.
This is where many seasoned executives are finding a new calling. They are becoming mentors, speaking to students, industry leaders at conferences, or supporting emerging entrepreneurs through organizations like SCORE, which connects retired executives with small business owners in need of guidance. By doing so, they are not just filling their own need for purpose; they are making a significant impact on the next wave of leaders.
The Power of Becoming an Author
Of course, as a writer and publisher, I believe one of the most powerful ways to share your voice and experience is by writing books. For many, this represents the pinnacle of their professional journey—a way to encapsulate decades of knowledge and share it with the world. But a book or a series of books is more than just a personal memoir or a reflection on past successes; it is a tool that can shape the future.
Here are three ways you can leverage your position as an author:

Expanding Your Reach: Writing Magazine Articles
In addition to authoring books, writing magazine articles offers another powerful outlet for sharing your voice. I know a thought leader who has authored numerous articles for top-tier publications. His voice now reaches a huge audience, and his role as a book author has only added to the credibility of his past experience. Through magazines, your insights can gain a broader readership, allowing you to influence both your industry and the wider public. Whether you are discussing trends, offering advice, or sharing your personal journey, magazine articles can serve as an extension of your legacy.
A New Journey Begins
Today’s “retirement” or slowing down following a busy professional life does not look the same as it did in my father’s time. In fact, it can be the most exciting time of your life!
As you transition into this new phase of life, consider the legacy you want to leave behind. Writing a book or contributing to magazines—and becoming a seasoned voice—is not just about reflecting on your career; it is about using your experience to guide and support others. It is a chance to fill the need for purpose by making a difference in the lives of those who are following in your footsteps.
In a world that is constantly changing, the wisdom of those who have come before is more valuable than ever. By sharing your voice, you can help shape the future—ensuring that the next generation benefits from the lessons you have learned. Your journey does not end with retirement; in fact, it is just beginning.
Connect With a Collaborator
Just as you did in the corporate world, consider finding a writing partner who can help you edit your work—whether it is a magazine article or books. This partner can guide you through the writing and publishing process, ensuring your message is clear, impactful, and reaches the audience you want to influence.
If you are ready to explore this new chapter, I would love to have a conversation about how we can work together to support and guide your journey. Your experience has shaped industries; now it is time to share that wisdom and continue making a difference.

3 个月Thanks Melissa Newton The door is always open to happy hour. It’s mostly a matter of choosing which door to enter. Whether it’s opening that first book in ages, deciding to write that first book, or finally deciding that “my health matters,” they are exciting decisions that invite transformation. Life might be great or one needs to hit the reset button, it really doesn’t matter. Life is about constant exploration and building community around things that matter most. Writing is incredibly therapeutic in ways we can’t possibly predict. Authors will share that it’s about discovering oneself through the process of placing words on paper. It sounds odd for an engineer to suggest that it’s almost mystical, but I can’t think of a better word to describe the process of getting on a journey that truly matters.

3 个月There are some LinkedIn voices I follow that are active writers and publishing. They are "sandwich signs" about the value of sharing knowledge through the written word. Cathy Cassata (no where near retirement, but an outstanding writer of magazine articles!) Scott Fulton (book author who enjoys sharing his voice of experience and continued learning.)
