A Season of Anticipation

A Season of Anticipation

The seasonal change of fall can bring many of the?most enjoyable activities this time of year. Cooling temperatures invite us outside more often. Students become acclimated to the school year, settling into the fall class schedule. Sporting events, particularly school-related events where children are involved, are fun and engaging on the sidelines, where family members, friends, and others cheer teams to victory. Preparing yard landscapes, like pruning and seeding for hibernation during the winter, for a spring awakening, is also a part of the season. More business trips include attending conventions and conferences.

Anticipation?can be a rollercoaster of emotions, a natural part of the human experience. It's the feeling we get when we expect something to happen (good or bad) and are left in anxious suspense. Some may feel excited, while others may feel nervous.? It's a feeling that can be thrilling and terrifying, often leaving us uncertain. Anticipation can mean waiting for something pleasurable, but it can also lead us into a state of anxiety. It's important to remember that these conflicting emotions are a natural part of the human experience, and it's okay to feel them.

In a Christian reference, anticipation often refers to the hope of the second coming of Christ to claim His kingdom. Christians are or should be in an ever-ready state of preparedness for the bridegroom's arrival.

These times of uncertainty challenge us to remain positive in a season of anticipation. Global events that singe our consciousness with wars, rumors of wars, political unrest, systemic racism, and?disastrous weather incidents that cause such devastation make recovery almost impossible. In the U.S., the current election season is weeks from culminating in the selection of the next President. The tension is so thick that one of the most stalwart political strategists admitted that “he is scared to death" about the outcome. He is not alone, and this uncertainty is reflected by many in both political parties.?However, in these moments of uncertainty, our positivity and hope become even more critical, guiding us through the anticipation of what's to come. ??

What can we do to navigate anticipation in uncertain times?

1. Focus on What You Can Control?

It’s easy to get overwhelmed by things beyond your control in uncertain times. Shifting your focus to areas where you have influence, such as your daily routines, decisions, and actions, can help manage feelings of powerlessness. Whether organizing your space, staying committed to work or family responsibilities, or focusing on self-care, controlling the controllable keeps your mind productive and positive.

2. Stay Informed, but Set Boundaries?

While staying informed about what’s happening in the world is essential, overconsumption of news can increase anxiety. Be intentional about how much time you spend absorbing the news. Choose credible sources and limit exposure to harmful or sensationalist media that feeds into fear. Setting healthy boundaries with media helps keep your anticipation grounded rather than spiraling into worst-case scenarios.

3. Cultivate Patience Through Mindfulness

Anticipation often builds because we focus on future outcomes. Practicing mindfulness helps anchor us in the present moment, reducing the anxiety from wondering what’s next. Mindfulness techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or simply observing the present without judgment allow you to release the grip of anxious anticipation. You increase your capacity to navigate uncertainty with a sense of calm by grounding yourself.

4. Lean on Your Faith or Personal Beliefs?

For those who practice faith, turning to spiritual beliefs during seasons of anticipation can offer comfort and guidance. In Christianity, the anticipation of Christ’s return is a reminder to stay hopeful and focused on the promises of God, even amid turmoil. Whether through prayer, meditation, or reading scripture, faith offers a source of peace and a reminder that even in uncertainty, there is a more excellent plan at work.

5. Practice Gratitude?

Gratitude is a powerful antidote to anxiety and uncertainty. When we shift our attention from what’s unknown to what we already have, it reframes our perspective. Writing down daily things you’re grateful for, even small ones, can help reset a mind consumed by worry. It keeps you grounded in the present, where positive experiences and blessings are already in motion, no matter the future.

6. Strengthen Your Support System

Uncertainty often feels isolated, but you don’t have to navigate it alone. Reaching out to friends, family, or trusted individuals for support can alleviate the pressure of anticipation. Talking about your feelings and sharing your concerns can help you gain new perspectives or insights you might not have considered. During times of uncertainty, leaning on others reminds us that we are not in this alone and that there’s strength in the?community.

7. Prepare for Multiple Outcomes?

Uncertainty often brings fear because we feel unprepared for what’s to come. One way to combat this is mentally and practically preparing for multiple outcomes. Whether personal, professional, or political uncertainty, brainstorming possible scenarios and how you might respond can ease some of the tension. This doesn't mean expecting the worst but building resilience to face whatever may come with confidence and flexibility.

In a season marked by anticipation, managing our emotions and staying grounded is crucial in facing the unknown. By taking proactive steps to control what we can, setting boundaries, practicing mindfulness, relying on faith, and preparing ourselves, we can approach uncertainty with hope rather than fear. Ultimately, it is the way we navigate anticipation that defines our experience through uncertain times.

Psalm 46:1-2

"God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble."

Philippians 4:6-7

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be known to God."
