I wanted to start publishing "The Lesson" which aggregates lessons I have learned over my marketing career in case it can be helpful to other professionals. Currently I find myself in transition as my CMO role was recently impacted due to my employer being acquired. Having experience helping others look for new opportunities, I thought I'd share a few lessons I have learned over the years for those who find themselves searching for what's next as I am. Here are some tips to help you find your next job opportunity:
.????Define your career goals: Before starting your job search, take some time to reflect on what you want from your career. Consider what kind of work you want to do, the type of company you want to work for, and the values you prioritize in your work. This will help you target your job search and increase your chances of finding a job that fits your needs. It also helps you answer the question from a recruiter "what are you looking for?" with an elevator pitch.
.????Update your resume and online presence: Your resume and online presence (such as LinkedIn) are often the first things potential employers see. Make sure your resume is up-to-date and highlights your relevant experience and accomplishments. Your LinkedIn profile should also reflect your career goals and showcase your expertise. Note- you may not be able to change your LinkedIn presence everytime you have a conversation with a potential employer but you can adjust your resume to the job spec to ensure they know how your specific experience relates to what they are looking for.

.????Network: Networking is key in finding new job opportunities. Reach out to former colleagues, attend industry events, and join professional organizations to expand your network. Let people know that you are actively looking for a new opportunity and ask if they have any leads or know of any job openings. Remember the six degrees of separation, somebody who knows someone knows about a job opening you would be interested in.
.????Research potential employers: Once you have identified companies you are interested in working for, research them thoroughly. Learn about their culture, values, and mission through public materials or people you know who currently or formerly worked there. This will help you determine if the company is a good fit for you and will also help you tailor your resume to the company. Recently I had a great discussion with an executive recruiter and their client was looking for a CMO that had specific beliefs and values that were different than mine. Not that one value is better than another, but they were different enough to agree the fit wasn't right and that's ok.
.????Be patient and persistent: Finding a new job opportunity can be a lengthy process, so be patient and persistent. Stay organized and track your job applications and follow-up communications. I keep a spreadsheet and it is extremely handy over time. Remember that rejection is a part of the job search process, but don't let it discourage you. Keep networking, applying and inquiring, and eventually, you will find the right opportunity.
