The Search for Thyself

As we journey through life, one of the most fundamental questions we grapple with is, "What is the meaning and purpose of it all?" Whether we're religious or secular, young or old, this question arises time and again, begging for an answer.

As a person of faith, I have often turned to the Bible for guidance and wisdom on this subject. One parable that stands out to me is the story of the talents in Matthew 25:14-30. In this story, a master entrusts his servants with various amounts of money, and when he returns, he rewards those who have invested their talents wisely. The parable teaches us that we have been given gifts and abilities, and it is our responsibility to use them to serve others and make a positive impact on the world.

Conducting self-identity exams can be a valuable exercise in gaining a deeper understanding of who we are as individuals and in various roles we play in life. Here are some steps to guide us through the process. I’ve done it myself and it produces wonderful results.

Reflection and introspection: Take the time, whether it is over a weekend, at the end of a long day, or on a break to allow yourself to clear your mind and allow yourself to reflect on your thoughts, feelings, values, and beliefs. Ask yourself open-ended questions such as: What are my strengths and weaknesses? What are my passions and interests? What are my core values and beliefs? Reflecting on these aspects will help you gain insights into your identity.

Self-assessment: Consider the different roles you play in your life, such as being a family member, a believer, a partner, or a parent. Evaluate your performance in these roles. Are there areas where you feel satisfied and fulfilled? Are there areas where you think you could improve? Assessing your actions and behaviors in each role can help you understand how you perceive yourself and how you contribute to those relationships.

Seek feedback: Reach out to trusted friends, family members, or mentors who know you well and ask for their honest feedback. Sometimes, others can provide valuable insights that we might not be aware of ourselves. Ask them questions about how they perceive you in different roles and listen carefully to their observations.

Journaling: Writing in a journal/notebook can be a powerful tool for self-reflection. Set aside regular time to jot down your thoughts, experiences, and emotions related to different aspects of your identity. This practice can help you identify patterns, discover new insights, and track your personal growth over time.

Engage in meaningful conversations: Engaging in discussions with others about beliefs, values, or challenges can provide you with different perspectives and enhance your understanding of yourself within those specific contexts.

Embrace growth and learning: Recognize that self-identity is not static but evolves. Be open to new experiences, challenges, and opportunities for growth. Embrace lifelong learning and seek out resources, books, workshops, or courses that can expand your knowledge and understanding in areas that are important to you.

Practice self-compassion: Remember to be kind and patient with yourself throughout this process. Self-identity exploration can be challenging and may uncover aspects that require growth or change. Treat yourself with compassion and celebrate the progress you make along the way.

By engaging in these self-identity explorations, you can develop a clearer understanding of who you are as an individual, a family member, a believer, a partner, or a parent, or any identity prioritization you feel defines you. This knowledge can empower you to align your actions and values, nurture meaningful relationships, and cultivate a greater sense of fulfillment in your life.

Upon conducting these questions and doing the relevant self-work, which can take anywhere from a week or for some people their entire lives - it all depends on how much time you allow yourself to be led and dive into deeper questions, hence the search for meaning and purpose doesn't end there.

To those who faith doesn't play a role in the search for meaning, secular teachings can be just as profound and insightful when it comes to answering life's big questions. One philosophy that resonates with me is existentialism, which emphasizes the importance of individual freedom and choice in creating meaning and purpose in life, or the scientific approach, which offers a wealth of knowledge and insights into the workings of the universe and our place in it. The study of the Big Bang theory, for example, helps us understand the interconnectedness of all living things and the incredible journey that has led us to where we are today.

Ultimately, the quest for meaning and purpose is a deeply personal one. It requires us to look within ourselves, explore our passions and values, and seek out the experiences and relationships that bring us joy and fulfillment. It is a journey that never ends and one that can take many twists and turns along the way.

We can only work on ourselves, however by growing and evolving as individuals, our surroundings notice our change and adapt themselves to our new sense of self. The more empowered you feel, the better the foundation, which will allow you to weather almost any storm.

For me, the search for meaning and purpose has been a lifelong pursuit. As a child I found joy in helping others and making a difference in their lives. As I grew older, I discovered a love for writing and storytelling, and I began to see how these passions could be used to inspire and uplift others.

But even now, as I reflect on my own journey and the lessons I've learned, I know that there is always more to discover, explore and evolve. And that's the beauty of the quest for meaning and purpose - it is never-ending, always evolving, and endlessly fascinating.

So if you're on a similar journey, I encourage you to embrace it with curiosity, openness, and a willingness to learn. Seek out the wisdom of the ages - whether it be from the Bible, secular philosophy, or scientific discovery - and be open to new experiences and perspectives that can broaden your horizons and deepen your understanding of yourself and the world around you.

Remember, the search for meaning and purpose is not just a philosophical pursuit - it is a practical one as well. When we have a sense of purpose and direction in life, we are more resilient, more creative, and more fulfilled. So keep seeking, keep exploring, and never stop growing.
