In search of ...... a suit that fits the Purpose #2

In the present article, I adapt and try to improve one of my favourite articles "Feasibility and Fitness for purpose" [Ref (1)] which discussed the choice of a wedding suit.

In a perspective of hope, I consider herein the opportunity of a job interview.??

Adam has allowed a rather modest budget for a suit for his coming job interview.?All in order to make a good first professional impression in the hope that this would help him be the ideal candidate for the vacant position.

In every day life, we are often confronted with similar choices when buying goods or equipment such as a mobile phone, furniture for the house or?a car.

On what criteria do we make our choices in such situation ??How can?some?federating criteria be meaningful?.??

The ?case of the suit for job interview ?comes to rescue to help answer these questions !??

First, it should be possible to buy?the desired suit on the local market with the afforded budget.????This means that buying the suit has to be?feasible.?This?concept is well know and of wide spread use in finances, economy, management and other fields.?

In addition, the suit?shall fit Adam well?and be appropriate for the occasion. It should also be suitable for going to work should he be selected or for other occasions.

In short,?the?suit needs to fit its purpose,?which seems rather all too obvious.??

We have considered an example of every day life ?in order to illustrate the concepts of feasibility and fitness for purpose ?which have applications in professional life.

Indeed, the concept of “Fitness for purpose” is used in works and design and build contracts,?to set a standard ?for the design and for the works to be carried out.??Such standard ?is more stringent?than “reasonable care” and “due diligence” which are prevalently used in design and engineering contracts.?

Full Understanding of ?the legal meanings of these concepts should be sought in the legal field.???

By the way, an entire book has been dedicated to the Fitness for Purpose of products.

Yet, altogether the concept of?“Fitness For Purpose” seems to be rather underused particularly in the management field.?

Armed with the concepts introduced above, Adam did make a good first impression on the interviewer and soon realized that this was not enough.?Luckily, he was glad that he was well prepared and for the interview and well qualified for the job since the veteran ?interviewer?knew all too well that “Know-how makes the difference”.?In all, he did quite well during the interview but remained unsure whether he well get the job or not.?In any case, he was determined to continue learning and improving this propects.

In conclusion, first, I believe that?awareness?of the need for?“Feasibility and Fitness For Purpose”?( 3FP)?could be of great help when making many management decisions as well as in other life situations.?Secondly, know-how is the suit that matters most.

P.S:?As it happens, the invented story above reminded me of a similar personal experience.?Back at the end of 2008, I was promptly invited for an interview a few days after submitting my application for a Project Director job with a real estate company.?I was rather confident and decided to buy a new pullover for the occasion ( 100 TND at the time).?However, the owner of the company spotted my weakness in the use of project planning software which compromised my chances.?This all goes to prove the point that “knowledge and know-how make the difference”
