The search for the second right answer

We’ve all worked with them, the know it all’s that suck all available space for dialogue as they monopolise conversations and lead with their viewpoint only.? This is made worse when they are the leader.

Leaders that believe that there is only one right answer, namely theirs, end up creating resentment and a lack of engagement in their teams, leading to dysfunction and resignations.

This week I heard Non-Executive Director and Chair; Catherine Livingstone AC FAICD talk about there always being a second right answer.? In her pragmatic keynote address at the Australian Institute of Company Directors Summit, she also added that the best conversations in leadership include a broader audience (CEO plus two levels below), rather than just the core leadership team.

This got me thinking, why do we tend to search for one right answer?? As leaders, how can we permit ourselves more time to explore, create and expand our thinking so we can discover more than one right answer to a challenge or opportunity?

?There is always a second right answer.

The concept of there always being a second right answer for leaders is a valuable perspective in leadership. It emphasises the importance of considering alternative viewpoints and solutions. This approach encourages us to explore beyond the obvious and traditional paths, fostering creativity and innovation within our teams.

By acknowledging that there can be multiple valid solutions to a problem, we can promote a culture of open-mindedness, collaboration, and continuous improvement.? Leaders who embrace the idea of a second right answer are more likely to encourage diverse thinking, challenge assumptions, and drive growth through unconventional approaches.

This mindset not only enhances problem-solving capabilities but also cultivates a work environment where individuals feel empowered to voice their ideas and contribute meaningfully to the organisation's success.? This increases psychological safety in the workplace and creates an environment that supports research, creativity, thinking, and sometimes even getting it wrong.? In essence, recognising the existence of a second right answer in leadership underscores the significance of flexibility, adaptability, and a willingness to explore different perspectives to achieve optimal outcomes.

Can you challenge yourself and your team to find a second right answer?
