Seamless & Consistent Designs with Midjourney's New 'Vary Region' Feature
Hey design lovers! Midjourney has rolled out a cool new feature: 'Vary Region'! This lets you change just parts of an image, and when you pair it with 'Icon Set', you can easily create a continuous style item set.
Until now I found it really tough to get several items in a design set to have the same visual style. Usually, you'd have to dive into tools like Photoshop to stitch several items for several images together.
Well, not anymore! With the 'Vary Region' feature, making continuous designs using the Icon Set keyword is super easy. If one of the items (or a feature within it) looks off, just swap it out until you love the whole set.
Check out these before-and-after examples to see what I mean:
Cute Aliens
I created an 'Icon Set' of a bunch of cute aliens, with a lot more focus on character design than say icons for a website. It looked almost ready for a Pixar movie with just a few flaws which I was easily able to swap out and get a much better final image (in my opinion).
I removed overlapping characters, the freakishly green hands on the orange alien, and the odd ears on my blue cutie. I also removed a few imperfections in the image such as background noise and weird shadows on their little stands.
Here is the prompt I used for this image:
Prompt: cute alien illustrations icons set, unreal engine, hyper-detailed, digital painting, digital art, gaming art, game assets, illustration, creative, expressive, detailed, colorful, digital art, 3D rendering, unique, Adobe Photoshop, 3D Studio Max, V – Ray, professional, 8k --ar 7:4
Tiny Skyscrapers
I wanted to explore if this could be used for web design as much as game design, so I tried using architecture with something that resembles icons a little more. The result is extremely detailed and would have taken any human a very long time to make! So very happy with it.
I simply swapped out the buildings I didn't like until I got the result I wanted.
If you want to recreate it yourself, here is the prompt I used.

Mini Superheroes
It seems Midjourney can run out of ideas. For these superheroes set I had many repetitions and had to regenerate until I was satisfied. One of the things I tried to avoid is the repetition of color in several characters and Midjourney's insistence on big neon red eyes.
This time I didn't mark the differences, can you spot them?
As always, here is the prompt I used
Prompt: cute mini superheroes icon set, marvel, dc, unreal engine, hyper detailed, digital painting, digital art,, illustration, creative, expressive, detailed, digital art, 3D rendering, unique, Adobe Photoshop, 3D Studio Max, V – Ray, professional, 8k --ar 7:4
Try It
You can access this feature by upscaling an image which now has a new button 'Vary (Region)'
Once you click it a tool will allow you to highlight the regions you want to replace.
Once you submit Midjourney will generate 4 new variations of the regions you selected.
Let me know if you find this interesting!
Happy Prompting :)
