Sealand is committed to making a difference not only in our operations, but in our community too.?Through our proud partnership with 1% For The Planet, we ensure that we donate 1% of our?total?revenue?to environmental partners who do amazing work beyond our scope, to steward our natural spaces and make a positive change to our shared planet.?
Our key beneficiary over the last two years has been Sentinel Ocean Alliance (SOA), an incredible and dynamic organisation almost on our doorstep in Hout Bay.?SOA?has done fantastic work over the past few years, transforming a once-derelict corner of the beach into a vibrant community space of learning, safety, ocean appreciation and environmental stewardship.?
Since 2021,?SOA?has:
-???????Graduated?790?students from their Parley Ocean School program
-???????Taught?672?children to swim in the ocean
-???????Presented?1,151?leaning sessions
-???????Intercepted?6,930kgs of plastic waste?
-???????Prepared?17,903?healthy meals for kids
They present a 16-week structured learning program for youth that aims to instruct and ignite a passion for the ocean within underserved coastal communities. They run ocean immersion and therapy sessions in which students learn not only about sea safety, but mindfulness practices and the importance of developing awareness of one’s connection to nature.

SOA?has a lengthy list of experts and public figures who have presented engaging weekly talks with learners, bringing real-world experience to the book learning. Hands-on activities help learners interact and connect directly with the ocean and its inhabitants, and create tangible connections.?Food and transport is provided to ensure that programs are inclusive and foster an environment conducive to learning – not rumbling tummies!?
Through a three-year activist programme, participants are taught not only the skills they need to save the sea but also to communicate this with public speaking and other "soft" skills training such as leadership and public speaking.?This enables these ocean champions to effectively communicate the challenges faced by coastal communities and the ocean as a whole, and develop innovative solutions to address these challenges.
And, of course, their development of the site in Hout Bay has been nothing short of phenomenal, turning an empty, waste-strewn corner into a bubbling heart of the community. This now forms not only their headquarters, but the newly-minted Hout Bay Lifesaving Club and an?SOA?coffee shop!
After our next GIVE bag drop, Sealand donated will have donated?1,417?of our GIVE bags to both graduates of their program and other underprivileged schoolchildren across Cape Town, enabling learners to focus on schoolwork and equipping them with one of the physical tools to succeed and thrive at school. In total, our donations of cash and product to?SOA?and other 1% For The Planet beneficiaries has exceeded R575,000 to date, enabling these inspirational organisations to keep up their incredible work and ensuring that when Sealand wins, the planet wins too.
