S.E.A.L. The Deal: Are You Leading with Tactics or Just Treading Water?

S.E.A.L. The Deal: Are You Leading with Tactics or Just Treading Water?

Is your leadership creating a positive work environment? How does your leadership approach appreciation, job fit, assignment bias, intentional team support, and situational leadership? Here are five pillars for team engagement:

Appreciating Individuals:

Take a moment to recognize the unique contributions each team member brings to the table not with gift cards, but with genuine appreciation of an individual. Appreciation can build a strong circus-like camaraderie within a team allowing for the fun of working together and yet achieving common goals.

Examples:

·??????Personalized: Send a personalized email expressing gratitude for an innovative idea and the positive impact it had on recent campaigns.

·??????Public Recognition: During a team meeting or in company-wide communication, publicly acknowledge an individual’s exceptional contributions.

Assessing Job Fit:

Make sure you are checking job fit to provide opportunities for growth and matching skill sets. Job fit goes a long way to enhance both personal satisfaction and overall team engagement.

Keys:

·??????Regularly evaluate an individual’s performance to identify areas where they excel and where they may need further development.

·??????Engage in a conversation with an individual to understand their skills, interests, and aspirations. Inquire about preferred tasks, areas of expertise, and any skills they would like to develop further. Build a relationship.

Checking Your Assignment Bias:

As a leader, do you have unconscious assignment biases that can influence your decisions? You need to encourage inclusion by giving everyone a fair chance to take on new challenges and showcase their abilities. I mean, even the office plant deserves a chance to water itself.

Keys:

Reflect on your Assignment Patterns: analyze your previous assignment patterns and identify any consistent biases, broaden your perspective, provide equal opportunities, and encourage self-nomination.

Intentionally Supporting Your Team:

Encourage collaboration, offer guidance, and actively listen to their concerns. By fostering a supportive environment, you empower individuals to grow.

Key:

Create a safe space where positive, purposeful, and productive conversations occur on a regular basis without fear of shame or retribution.

Giving Permission to Lead:

Leadership is not limited to a specific position or title. Encourage individuals to step up and lead, regardless of their role within the organization. Everyone has a superpower and situational leadership opportunities to be the superhero who takes initiatives, makes decisions, and saves the day.

Leadership Engagement:

Engage with your team through regular check-ins, team meetings, and one-on-one conversations. Show genuine interest in their professional growth, provide constructive feedback, and empower them to take ownership of their work.

Using these practices in your daily interactions, you can foster an “I get to go to work” atmosphere rather than an “I have to go to work” atmosphere.

Remember, leadership is not just about being serious and stern, but also about creating a space where everyone can thrive, have fun, and be their best selves.
