A sea ?? of opportunities to accelerate the energy transition ?

Hello everyone! Welcome back to the Smart Green People newsletter and thank you for joining us again as we invite you to take a look inside the world of team Iberdrola!

Let’s start in the world of offshore wind, where we are continuing to make waves! ?? Right now, we are building more projects than ever before. This clean energy sector at sea ?? is growing non-stop, and we’re growing with it ?? Of the €15.5 billion to be invested in renewables as part of Iberdrola’s strategic plan up to the end of 2026, around €8.4 billion (54% of the total) is being committed to offshore wind. This will help us to grow our offshore wind capacity by more than 160% in just three years, from 1,800 MW in 2023 to 4,800 MW in 2026. We led the way in onshore wind more than two decades ago and we are proud to be doing the same out at sea.

• We’ve received full federal approval of the Construction and Operations Plan (COP) for the New England Wind 1 and 2 offshore projects. The approval of the COP follows the favorable Record of Decision (ROD) issued by the Biden Administration in April 2024. Combined, the projects will create up to 9,200 full-time equivalent jobs and bring $8 billion in direct investment to the region ????

• Vineyard Wind 1, our first offshore wind farm in the U.S., has recently become the country’s largest operational offshore project by commissioning the first 10 wind turbines. These turbines are already generating 136 MW ? to the grid in the New England region of the U.S., enough to supply more than 64,000 homes and businesses in Massachusetts.

• We are also advancing with our next project in German waters, Windanker (315 MW). We’ve just finalized contracts with the supply chain, and that only means one thing… the manufacturing of components and construction is set to start ????! This wind farm will generate more than 1,200 jobs ????♂?, with 130 suppliers from 22 countries around the world.

• The construction of Baltic Eagle (350 MW) continues to make giant strides. Our second wind farm in Germany already has dozens of wind turbines installed out of the 50 it will have in total. We recently visited the project to see how it was progressing, don’t miss it! ??????

Wind Farm Data Manager ??

In total the world's wind power capacity now stands at 906 GW. This green power growth is impressive and so too is the cutting-edge work going on to develop advanced management tools to boost efficiency.? ?

To this end, the Iberdrola Innovation Middle East team, together with the global team of Iberdrola Renewables, has developed the 'Operational Wind Farm Data Manager' — an advanced tool analyzing data from over 400 Iberdrola wind farms around the world to estimate electrical losses, optimize efficiency, and predict future energy production.

A sustainable company

More great news we have received is that we have been included in the inaugural list of the most sustainable companies in the world published by TIME magazine.

The companies at the top of the list have signed on to some of the most respected climate programs and receive high scores from CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project). TIME and Statista further held companies to high standards for their Scope 1 and 2 emissions and energy consumption relative to company size, emissions reductions in 2021 and 2022, and proportion of renewable energy used by the company’s operations.

Inauguration of training center in the U.S.

And we want to end the newsletter by congratulating our Avangrid colleagues on their great inauguration of the National Training Center (NTC) in Oregon. The NTC is a world-class facility located in Sherman County near many of Avangrid’s operating wind and solar farms and will serve as a centralized location to train and upskill technicians working across Avangrid’s onshore renewable energy portfolio.
