SDWAN & SASE - DIY vs MNSP

SDWAN & SASE - DIY vs MNSP

Leaning into a co-managed solution from a Managed Network Service Provider (MNSP) usually makes more sense than a DIY (do-it-yourself) approach when it comes to SD-WAN and SASE solutions, and here’s why.?

Resource Allocation and Focus:?

Co-Managed Solution (MNSP): Co-management allows your internal IT team to focus on strategic initiatives, innovation, and core business functions. Routine tasks such as monitoring, patching, and troubleshooting are handled by the MNSP.

DIY Approach: Managing SD-WAN and SASE internally diverts resources from critical projects. IT staff may spend significant time on operational tasks rather than strategic planning.

?

AI Ops Integration:?

Co-Managed Solution (MNSP): MNSPs often incorporate AI Ops tools into their services. AI-driven insights enhance network performance, security, and troubleshooting. Proactive monitoring detects anomalies and prevents issues before they impact users.

DIY Approach: Implementing AI Ops internally requires significant investment in tools, training, and expertise. MNSPs already have these capabilities, providing a cost-effective solution.

?

Expertise and Specialization:

?Co-Managed Solution (MNSP): MNSPs specialize in network management, security, and optimization. Their teams comprise experts with in-depth knowledge of SD-WAN, SASE, and related technologies. Leveraging their expertise ensures efficient deployment, configuration, and ongoing maintenance.

DIY Approach: In-house IT teams may lack specialized knowledge or experience in deploying and managing complex networking solutions. DIY efforts often involve trial and error, leading to inefficiencies and potential security gaps.

?

Risk Mitigation and SLAs:

?Co-Managed Solution (MNSP): MNSPs offer Service Level Agreements (SLAs) that guarantee network performance, uptime, and security. They assume responsibility for meeting these SLAs, reducing risk for your organization.

DIY Approach: Without external support, your organization bears the full risk of network outages, security breaches, and performance issues. Meeting SLAs becomes challenging without specialized tools and expertise.

?

Predictable Costs and Budgeting:

?Co-Managed Solution (MNSP): MNSPs typically follow an OPEX (operational expenditure) model. Predictable billing simplifies financial planning and avoids unexpected expenses.

DIY Approach: DIY efforts may lead to unpredictable costs due to unforeseen challenges, delays, or additional resource requirements. Budgeting becomes more complex.

?

Vendor Relationships and Vendor Consolidation:

?Co-Managed Solution (MNSP): MNSPs maintain relationships with multiple vendors, streamlining procurement and support. Vendor consolidation simplifies management and reduces complexity.

DIY Approach: Managing multiple vendors directly can be time-consuming and challenging. Co-managed solutions offer a single point of contact for vendor-related issues.

Choosing a co-managed solution from an MNSP combines the best of both worlds: internal control and external expertise. It ensures efficient operations, risk mitigation, and optimized network performance while leveraging AI Ops tools for proactive management.

Now that we've cleared that up, how do you choose the right MNSP...

Well, that's a longer conversation... If you want to get my take on that, drop me a note and we can carve out some time to unpack how our data driven strategic sourcing platform can cut through the" marketechture", accelerate time to value, and help keep your team focused on what matters most.

Be diverse, not redundant (It's important for access AND important for people)

While improved application performance is expected and observed with initial deployment of SD-WAN or SASE, a knowledgeable MNSP will make continuous adjustments as the habits of the network users, needs of the business, change in traffic patterns, and new security threats are experienced. This is the real value of managed service.

I'm partial to the MNSP approach since it's my background, but the design/deployment portion of your post is a big one. Collaborating with a company whose deployed thousands of SDWAN locations can make a huge difference in getting your ideal architecture setup from the jump. The time to value from your initial investment when DIY'ing can sometimes extend for years.

Tim Hammer is the man. I would get SASE with it using Technologent managed services.
