#Africa and the world needs development practitioners who have a deep understanding of?the complexity of developmental challenges and who have the leadership capacities to design and implement solutions to the integrated and multidisciplinary Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Leadership is arguably one of the most important yet one of the most under-researched requirements for the realization of the #SDGs. These two statements motivated me to enroll and study for the MPhil in Development Practice program at the University of Pretoria. My MPhil journey reached its peak last month (July 2021) with this email (picture below) from Springer Nature Group notifying yours truly that my book chapter contribution had been published (https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-3-030-70952-5_7.) Now that the publisher has already “christened” me with the “Dr” title?l will have to take up the challenge and pursue my PhD studies soonest(wink wink).
Though my contribution in this series is in the #Energy development sector and not in the Health development sector l have been primarily and passionately working in over the years, I am equally committed to improving access and quality of energy to the majority of people especially in Africa since access to reliable electricity has been noted as the “backbone of any modern economy”.?A recent report indicated that Africa had an electricity access of only 43% (https://openknowledge.worldbank.org/bitstream/handle/10986/31333/9781464813610.pdf?deliveryName=DM10178). Most importantly leadership capacities are transferable skills that can be applied in any development sector, program, project and business hence the need for interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and transboundary approaches to development.?
Thank you to Springer Nature Group and the Editors of the #SDGS4SocietyBookSeries ; thank you Prof. Tawana Kupe and the team at University of Pretoria/Universiteit van Pretoria for the opportunity to experience the #AfricanGlobalUniversity; a BIG thank you to the #Faculty_of_Economic_and_Management_Sciences , #Albert_Luthuli_Leadership_Institute, #SASDGHub, #FutureAfrica to the programme director and my supervisor Prof Willem Fourie for his commitment to the #Agenda2030 and his belief in the critical role leadership plays in all matters development, your patience, guidance and confidence is much appreciated; thank you to?my colleagues in the inaugural @MDP@UP class for your support, teamwork and anecdotal experiences (it was a blast!) and most importantly thank you to everyone involved in the case study that anchored our book chapter and in the transformative UNDP Botswana Biogas project.
